CITY ORDINANCES.
Ihe following are the city ordinances
enacted by the counoil of the town of
Jackson on January 23rd for the year
1894.:
Sectiox 1 . Be it ordained by the
mayor and oouncil of the town of Jack
son, and it is hereby ordained by author
ity of the same, that the following licen
ces shall be levied and collected in the
town of Jackson for the year 1894.
Sec. 2. All persons, firms, companies,
or corporations selling er offering for
sal# in the town of Jackson, clothing,
hats and gents’ furnishing goods, either
alona or in connection with other busi
ness, shall pay a tax of $lO.
Sec. 3. All persons, firms, companies
or corporations selling or offering for
■ale, boots, shoes and shoe findings,
•ithar alone or in connection with other
business shall pay a tax of $lO,
Sec. 4. All persons, firms, companies
or corporations selling or offering for
sale, dry goods, notions and dress goods,
•ither alone or in connection with other
business, shall pay a tax of $lO.
Sec. 5. All persons, firms, companies
or coprorations, silling or offering for
sale, heavy groceries and plantation
supplies, either alone or in connection
with other business, shall pay a tax of
$lO.
Sec. 0. All persons, firms, companies
or corporations, selling or offering for
sale, millinery goods, either alone or in
connection with other business, shall
pay a tax of $lO.
Sec. 7. All parsons, firms, companies
or corporations, selling or offering for
■ale, fancy and family groceries, confec
tioneries, fruits and vegetables, either
alone or in connection with other busi
ness, shall pay a tax af S2O.
Sec. 8. All persons, firms, companies
or corporations, selling or offering for
■ale, tobacoo, cigars or smokers’ articles,
either alone or in connection with other
business, shall pay a tax of $5.
Sec, 9. All persons, firms, companies
or coprorations, selling or offering for
sale, buggies, carts, surreys, carriages,
or wagons, (other than their own man
ufacture) either aloue or in connection
with other busiuess, shall pay a tax of
sls.
Sec. 10. All persons, firms, 10m
panies or corporations, selling or offer
ing for sale, crockery-wtre, China-ware,
glass-war#, limps and lamp fixtures,
either alone or in connection with other
business, shall pay a tax of $5.
Sec. 11. All persons, firms, companies
or corporations, selling or offering for
sale, drugs, patent or proprietory medi
cines, either alone or in connection with
other business, shall pay a tax of S2O.
Sec, 12. All persons, firms, companies
or corporations, selling or offering for
sale, paint, varnish, linseed oil, painters*
supplies, white-wash, shoe and shaving
brushes, either alone or in connectlou
with other business, shall pay a tax $5.
Sec. 13. All persons, firms, companies
or corporations, selling or offering for
sale, surgical instruments, appliances,
or optical goods, either alone or in con
nection with other business, shall pay

Sec. 14. All peraons, firms, com
panies or corporations, running a soda
fountain, either alone or in connec
tion with other business, shall pay a
tax of $5.
Sec. 15. All persons, firms, com
panies or corporations, selling or offer
ing for sale, cider of any kind, what
ever, either alone or in connection
with other business, shall pay a tax ef
$5.
Sec. IC. All persons, firms, com
panies or corporations, selling or of
fering for sale, stationery, books or
stationer’s supplies, either alone or in
connection with other business, shall
pay a tax of $lO.
Sec. 17. All persons, firms, companies
or corporations, doing or offering to do,
a fire insurance business, either alone or
in connection with any other business,
each company or agent, shall pay a tax
cf $lO.
Sec. IS. All persons, firms, companies
or corporations, doing or offering to do,
a life or aooident insurance business,
either alone or in connection with other
business, shall pay a tax, each company
or agent, of $25.
Sxc. 19. .All persons, firms, eompanies
or corporations, publishing or offering to
publieh, a weekly or dally newspaper,
either alone or in connection with other
bneiness, shall pay a tax of $lO.
Sec. 20. All persons, firms, companies
or corporations, doing or offering to do,
a job printing bnsiness, or eoliciting job
work, either alone or in connection with'
other business, shall pay a tax of $5.
Sec. 21. All persons, firms, companies
or corporations, doing or affering to do,
a banking business, eithsr by itself or in
conneetion with other business, shall
pay a tax of $25.
Sec. 22. Bach building and loan asso
ciation, local or foreign, agent for same,
loaning or offering to loan money,fsliall
pay a tax of $25.
Sec. 23. Each circus, show, opsra
company, minstrel show, or other show
or shows of any kind, whatever, shall
pay a tax in the discretion of the mayor
for eaeh day or performance.
Sec. 24. All persons, firms, compa
nies, or corporations, running a shoe
repair shop, either alone or in con
nection with other business, shall pay a
tax of $2.50.
Sec. 25. All persons, firms, compa
nies, or corporations, running a harness
repair shop, either alone or in connection
with other business, shall pay a tax of
$2.50.
Sec. 20. All persons, firms, companies
or corporations teaching, or offering to
teach, a dancing school, either alone or
in connection with other business, shall
pay a tax of sls.
Sec. 27. All persons, firms cempanies
or corporations buying, or offering to
buy eotton, either alone or in eoonneo
tion with other business, shall pay a tax
of $lO.
Sec. 28. All persons, firms, companies
or corporations operating, er offering
to operate the business of renovating
feathers, either alone er in connection
with other business, shall pay a tax of
$lO.
Sec. 29. All persons, firms, compa
nies or corporations selling, or offering
to sell, harness, bridles, saddles, lap
robes, either alone or in connection with
other business, shall pay a tax of $5.
Sec. 30. All persons, firms, compa
nies or corporations, selling, or offering
to sell, any guano, or commercial fertili
zers (other than his own manufacture)
by itself or in connection with other
business, shall pay a tax of $lO.
Sec. 31. All persoas, firms, compa
nies or corporations, who shall buy and
import chemicals and other materials
for mixing any guano or oommerolal fer
tilizers and who do buy and import such
chemicals and other materials for mix
ing, and do mix any guano er commerci
al fertilizers, and sell, or offer to sell,
such guano or oommeroial fertilizers,
when so mixed, shall be deemed a dealer
in guano and commercial fertilizers, and
required to pay the tax required by sec
tion 30 of the ordinance,
Sec. 32 All persons, firms, compa
nies or' corporations, running a feed or
liyery stable, either alone or in connec
tion with other business, shall pay a tax
of SJO.
Sec. 33. All persons, firms, compa
nies or corporations, running a public
ginnery, either alone or in connection
Avith other business, shall pay a tax of
$lO.
Sec. 34. All persons, firms, compa
nies or corporations, running a bottling
works, by itself or in connection with
other business, shall pay a tax of $5.
Sec. 35. All persons, firms, compa
nies or corporations, doing, or offering
to do, the business of an undertaker, ei
ther alone or in connection with other
business, shall pay a tax of $lO.
Sec. 36. All persons, firms, compa
nies or corporations, selling, or offering
to sell, house or office furniture, either
alone or iu oannection with other busi
ness, shall pay a tax of $lO.
Sec. 37. All persons, firms, companies
or corporations, running a blacksmith
shop, either aloue or in connection with
other business, shall pay a tax of $5.
Sec. 38. All persons, firms, companies
or corporations, running, or offering to
run, a wood repair shop, either alone or
in connection with other business, shall
pay a tax of $5.
Sec. 39. All persons, firms, companies
or corporations, soiling stoves, tinware,
woodenwaro or house furnishing goods,
either alone or in ooDneotion with other
business, shall pay a tax of sls.
Sec. 40. All persons, firms com
panies or corporations, running a tin
or stove repair shop, either alone or in
connection with other busiuess, shall
pay a tax of $5.
Sec. 41. All persons, firms, com
panies or corporations, selling, or of
fering to sell, lumber, lime, cement,
or building material, either alone or
in connection with other business,
shall pay a tax of $lO.
Sec. 42. All persons, firms, oompanies
or corporations, running or offering to
run a hotel, either alone or in connec
tion with other business, snail pay a tax
of $lO.

pay a tax of $5.
Sec. 44. All male persons, between
the ages of 16 and 50 years of age, shall
pay a street or comutation tax of $3,
or be required to work six days on the
streets, under and by direction of the
marshal; and all persons subject to street
duty under this ordinance, and who fail
or refuse te pay said tax, when required
to do so, and who fail or refuse to appear
to work when summoned by the mar
shal, shall, on conviction before the
mayor, be found not to exceed ten dol
lars or be imprisoned in the guard house
and work on the streets not to exoeed
fifteen days, one or both in the discre
tion of the mayor.
Sec. 45. All persons, firms, compa
nies er oorporations, running or offering
to run a two-horse dray or wagon, either
alone or in connection with other busi
ness, shall pay a tax of $lO.
Sec. 46. All persons, firms, compa
nies or oorporations, running or offering
to run a one-horse dray or wagon, either
alone er in connection with other busi
ness, shall pay a tax of $5.
Sec. 47. All persons, firms, compa
nies or corporations, running or offering
to run a cotton ware house, either alone
or in connection with other business,
shall pay a tax of sls.
Sec. 48. All persons, firms, compa
nies or corporations, doing or offering
to do the business of an anctionesr,
either alone or in connection with other
business, shall pay a tax of $5 for each
day.
Sec. 49. All peraons, firms, comna
niss or corporations, operating or offer
ing to operate a fereotype or photagraph
gallery, or soliciting orders for enlarg
msnt of pictures, either alone or in con
neetion with other businees, shall pay a
tax of $lO. '
Snc. 50. All persons, firms, compa
nies or corporations, selling or offering
for sale any coal, either alone or in con
nection with other business, shall pay
a tax of $lO.
Sec. 51. All persons, firms, compa
nies or corporations, running or offer
ing to run a shooting gallery, either alone
or in connection with other business,
shall pay a tax of $lO.
Sec. 52. All persons, firms, compa
nies or corporations, running or offering
to run a billiard or pool table, for pay,
either alone or in connection with other
business, shall pay a tax of SSO on each
table.
Sec. 53. All persons, firms, compa
nies or corporations, stlling or offering
for sale guns, pistole or sporting goods,
either alone or in connection with other
business, shall pay a tax of $lO.
Sec. 54. All persons, firms, compa
nies or corporations, selling pr offering
for sale clock, watches, and jewelry,
either alone or in connection with other
business, shall pay a tax of $lO.
Snc. 55* All persons, firms, companies
or corperations, buying or offering to bay
cotton teed, either elene er in connection
with other basinets, shall pay a tax of slo.
Sec, §6. All persons, firms, companies
or corporations, keeping a stallion or jack
tor service, shall pay a tax of $lO for
each animal.
Sic. 57. All persons, firms, companies
or corporations, selling or offering for sale
castor oil, spirits turpentine, salts, sulphur,
coperas, paregonc, laudanum or pills,
shall he deemed a dealer in drug# and re
quired to pay the tax required in See. 11
ef ibis ordinance.
Sec. 58. All persons, firms, companies
or corporations, selling or offering for sale
sewing machines, other than those whose
manufacturer has paid to the state such
taxes as are required by the state law,
shall pay a tax of $lO.
Sec. 59. All persona, firms, companies
or corporations, selling or offering for sale
any patent or proprietary medicines, shall
pay a tax ef $lO per day, provided he or
they shall be a non-resident.
Seo. 60 All persons, firms, companies
or corporations, selling or offering for sale
domestic wine or his or their own make,
shall pay a tax of $25; provided that no
such domestic wine when sold shall not
be allowed drank on the promises of the
seller, and if such persons, firms, compa
nies or corporations, shall permit such do
mestic wine when so sold to be drank on
his or their premises, on conviction before
the mayor, shall pay a fine not to exceed
fifty dollars or be imprisoned in the guard
house and worked on the streets not to
exceed thirty days, one or both iu the dis
cretion of the mayor
Sec. 61. xll persons, firms, companies
or corporations, running or offering to
run a barber shop, shall pay a tax of
$2.50 for each chair.
Sec. 62. All persons, firms, companies
or corporations, selling or offering for sale
live stock, either alone or in connection
with other business, shall pay a tax of sls.
Sec. 63. All persons, firms, compa
nies or corporation, doing the busi
ness as a contractor or builders busi
ness, either alone or in connection
with other business, shall pay a tax
of so.
Sec. 64. All persons, firms, com
panies or corporations, selling, or of
fering to sell, fresh meats, fish or oys
ters, by retailing (other than then
own raising) either alouo or in con
nection with other busiuess, shall pay
a tax of Five Dollars.
Sec. 65. All persons running a
dye house, either alone or in connec
tion with other business, shall pay a
tax of $2,50.
Sec 66. All persoue, firms, compa
nies or corporations, selling, or offer
ing for sale, lightning rods, either
alone or in connection with other bus
iness, shall pay a tax of $25.
Sec. 67. All persons, firms, com
panies or corporations, selling, or of
fering for sale, fruit trees, graje vines
or ornamental shrubbery, either alone
or m connection with other business,
shall pay a tax of $5.
Sec. 68. All persons, firms, com
panies or corporations, keeping au op
era house, or hall for rent, either
alone or in connection with other bus
ines, shall pay a taxot Five Dollars.
Sec. 69. All persons, firms, com
panies or corporations,doing, or offer
ing to do, a real estate business, either
alone or ii connectien with other bus
iness, shall pay a tax of Ten Dollars.
’Sec. 70. All persons, firms, com
panies or corporations, selling or offer
ing to sell, gins, engines, mowers or
other machinery, either alone or in
connection with other business, shall
pay a tax of Five Dollars.
Sec. 71. All persons, firms, com
panies or corporations, selling, or of
fering for sale, pianos or organs, either
by themselves or agents, either alone
or in connection with other business,
shall pay a tax of Fifteen Dollars.
Sec. 72. All persons keeping or
maintaining a dog or bitch, shall pay
a tax of one dollar, and all persons
keeping or maintaining a dog or bitch
shall register such dog or bitch with
clerk of council, and the said clerk
shall have made or buy a sufficient
number of collars or badges, not to
exceed a cost of fifty cents each, and
the said clerk shall furnish to each
person who registers a dog or bitch
such collar or badge, who shall be re
quired to put the same on and be
worn by such dog or bitch, and all
dogs or bitches caught on the street
after the passage of this ordinance
without said badge or collar shall be
empounded by the marshals, and no
tice of the same posted at two or more
public places in said city for twenty
four hours, and if no one shall claim
and register and pay the one cellar
required by this ordinance, it shall
then be the duty of the marshals to
kill the same.
Sec. 73. All persons, firms, com
panies or corporations, doing or of
fering to do the business of repairing
watches, clocks, pistols or guns, shall
pay a tax of $2 50.
Sec. 74. Each person, firm, com
pany or corporation, that may exer
cise in said city, any trade, business
or calling of any kind whatever,
and have no regular place of business,
shall be subject to the same rules,
ordinances and regulations as other
persons carrying on a like trade, busi
ness or calling in said city.
Sec. 75. Be it further ordianed,
and it is hereby ordianed by authority
of the same that all ordinances in
conflict with this ordinance be and the
same is hereby repealed. Adopted,

We notice in the Atlanta Constis
tution of Wednesday that Mr. H. j.
Collins formerly of this city, is in
serious trouble at that place.
It seems from the article that Mr.
Collins collected some two hundred
dollars belonging to his employer
and skipped out, and his where
abouts are unknown. During his
residence here this gentleman bore
a good reputation for honesty and
fair dealing, and we hope there is
some error in the article referred to
and that Mr. Collins will finally
come out all right.
