COURTS.
God forbid that any citizen of Butls
county, or ibis continent, shall ever
be tried before a court whose judge is
dependent upon the commission of
crimes for a living. May the day
never dawn upon this 19th centmy
when courts will be run like a mill
for the toll, and men will have to de
pend on, or contend for justice before
a judge whose meat and bread is se
cured by ti. clii g (lie prisoner guilty,
and whoso poverty is insured by turn
ing the captive free. Our people are
now thinking of this matter and be
ginning to comprehend the danger of
a court run for the toll. The impar
tial judge Is the salaried one, whois
unbiased and will receive the same
emolument in the event of conviction
or acquittal. It is a dangerous thing
to soil the ermine of tlio bench. It
has not and must not be done. Courts
must not enter polities, aad become
issues in such contests, for all political
parties or factious, and every class of
citizens have a right to expect justice
before our courts. They are the one
thing left us in these days of unrest
that is tree of tho partisan spirit of
political parties ot the day. God save
our courts of justice from politics.
The only tiling that is worse than a
partisan court is a partisan church.
Lets keep a watchful eye on these
threatening dangers. •
Suppose an insurance company
should employ an examiner with the
understanding that he received noth
ing when the applicant was rejected
and ten dollars when he passed.
Don’t you know that the company
would break in a few years with a
large crowd ot consumptives on band
and that there would boa very rich
doctor in the community. Such a re
sult can be foreseen by any business
man and the piiuciple is the same in
a self-sustaining court. The primary
object of courts is to punish crime,
ami meet out exact justice to all men,
as such tney must be untrameled and
lice from bias. Even though a man
should rise abotehis personal inter
ests and do justice, other men can not
believe, and it is slili unsatisfactory.
We are glad to say iu this connec
tion that neither of our present can
didates favor any such thing as the
establishment of any such a court iu
our county, and it cannot be made an
issue in the present canvass. So far
as the Argus is concerned, there will
bo no preferance shown anv candidate
in our county. They are all our neigh
bors and we will not useour9pace
for the purpose of furthering one or
the other. We will permit no un
signed articles, for wo do not intend
to become responsible for other peo
ple’s opinions, and no man need ex
pect to get printing done without his
name attached.
Queen Victoria is 75 years old and
healthy. Prince of Wales is much
younger though bald and bad. It
looks as though the “best queen,”
etc., would last longer than the rapid
gaited Albert, whose only great ac
complishment seems to be the fact
that he invented a coat with a long
tail and bearing his name. “Prince
Albert.”
OUR NEIGHBORS.
The People’s party platform is as
touch susceptible of two constructions
as the democratic platform. The way
the populist of the South coustrue their
platform is one thing and the national
construction might be another. The
populist don't consider the democratic
platform a bad one when construed by
a southern democrat, and we might say
the populist are Principally “dissatisfied
democrats,” and, therefore, their con
struction of their p'aiform is tainted with
democracy. But we advise our farmer
friends to go slow on this platform bus
iness for if the populist platform is not
centralizing we caD’t see straight. If
that instrument don’t increase the power
of the government and take away per
sonal liberty, or individual rights, it
don’t do anything at all. You had bet
ter go slow. The hobgoblins will get
you if you—don’t watch—out.
The Telfair Enterprise, one of the
ablest weeklies in the state, says:
“lion. A. O. Bacon seems tote the
choice of a large share of the voters
ot Georgia for the high, honorable
responsible position to which he~ls
aspiring, that of United States sena
tor. The dignity and importance of
the otlice demands a gentleman of like
kind, and we believe Mr. Bacon will
come squarely up.to the mark. We at
least are in the Bacon column.
A philosopner is a man who can
feel as easy over his own troubles as
he does over his neighbor’s. There
are no philosophers.
To refuse to speak to your next door
ne’ghbor, and emit prayers for tbe
heathen, is a sort of a consistency that
don’t jingle.
The Atlanta Journal and the Atlanta
Evans’ campaign People’s Will has got
the Constitution in such a muddle that
it can’t make an ordinary calculation.
It says: ‘‘lt went two to one for Gen’l
Eyans out of a vote of less than 400 he
got 200 majority.” Great Scott! there
is not a boy in town but knows that that
would be four to one. If he had got
only two to one out of less than 400, he
could not have gotten a majority of more
than 133 1-3.
The candidates for the legislature in
every county should be required to state
their preference for United States sena
tor. The people have a chance now to
select their senator by making their can
didates unbosom themselves. Here in
Butts we don’t think a man can run well
before the people who will not agree to
give his support to Hon. A. O. Bacon.
Speak out gentleman and let us know
how you stand.
The world is sadly in need of an
inventor that will warn people when
they have talked enough.

to be well introduced to yourself.

TO THE DEMOCRATIC VOTERS OF
BUTTS COUNTY.
This is the first time I have ever asked
the people to give me an office and my
reasons tor placing myself before the pub
lic for their suffrage are these:
First, I am a poor man and a great por
tion of the time I am not able to do farm
work. I own no land and am compelled
to eke out a scanty living for a wife and
six small children as a renter.
Second, I have suffered many hardships
and misfortunes, among which was the
loss of two wives and three children, and
have recently had a great deal of sickness
in my family, lam an old confederate
soldier aud while in the defense of my
country contracted iheumatism from which
lam a daily sufferer. I ask for the offiee
of 2’ax Collector and will be thankful for
auj' favors extended to me by my friends.

never drawn any pension like others of
both wars have done.

l or Clerk.
I hereby announce myself as a candi
date for clerk of the Super or court of
Butts county- I ara not drawn o t so
much by the “solicitation of friends,” as
is so common among candidates, as 1 am
by the necessity of a large family of chil
dren and a sickly wife to support. I place
myself in the hands of the democratic
party and will abide by the result ©f the
primary election. David J. Thaxton.
I hereby announce myself as a candi
date for Clerk Superior court ot 2?utts
county, having been solicited by many
friends to do so, and as I am an old vet

nor have ever applied for one, I would
take it as a great favor if the democracy
of the county through their action would
favor me w-ith the nomination.
