Brass is a very potent factor in th*
success of a man who is dealing will

Messrs. D. A. Rosser and A. C. Davis,
oi Henry county, were in town Tues
day. We never knew before that Mr.
Rosser made any claim to wealth, but he
treated us to soda water, here the first
of June, and actually paid cash for it.
Mr. J. If. Mills, of Jenkiusburg, is
probably the youngest delegate yet se
lected to the gubernatorial convention.
Mrs. G. W. Thurston, an estimable
lady of our towu died last Saturday.
Mrs. Thuiston was a consistent mem

and lived a long and useful life in this
county. The children, the grand chil

sympathy.
Mr. Charles llarkness was buried
today at Jackson cemetery, lie was in
the prime of life, but that terrible and
unrelenting enemy to humanity, the
-cancer, fastened its fatal fangs upon
his system and death came to his relief
on W ednesday. Mr. llarkness was a
good citizen, and a gentleman whose
character stands out as bright as the

-Mi'. D. M. BeO, who lives near
Llyin in this county, and who is 75
years old, thought he hear.i a noise in
his barn last Tuesday night about 3
o clock. He took his gun and went on
an investigating tour. One Lewis
Barkley, colored, had secured about
I<K) pounds of fodder, and when he
heard Mr. Bell approaching lie ran.
Mr. Bell asked the gentleman to stop
which he refused to do, until Mr. Bell
persuaded him to stop suddenly by
putting a load of shot in his thigh.
It was a good shot to have been made
in the night b} r as old a man as Mr.
Bell.

Political, confederate and social cir
cles at Lexingto , Ky., are more ex
cited now than ever because a young
woman’s auxiliary of the Confederate
Association had stormy meetings and
had refused to decorate the confeder
ate graves because BreckeuGdge was
a member of the veteran’s association.
The president of the auxiliary says it
will take no part in the Breckenridge
case of a body. Mrs A. M. Harrison,
secretary and her sister-in-law, Miss
Marv Harrison, vice president, ofthe
auxiliary, resigned their offices today.
They are severe in condemnation of
Colonel Breckenridge, and while they
give no open reason for rssigning.
They say plainly it ought not to be
difficult to infer why they quit the
organization.
