IL re goes our esteem,
To sweet Hattie May:
For the cape jesamine,
She sent the other day.
Its odor lingers yet.
Its emblem—loye they say—
Is here to stay—you bet—
For sweet Hattie May.
Dr. Gardner spends a great deal of
his time in visiting the neighbors in and
around town, especially the sick.
We have the prettiest correspondent
at Jenkinsburg who ever graced a Jour
nal with sweet thoughts.
Some peple say it is not what you say
but what you do, that you are judged by.
Yes, if you don't do what you say you
are a I—fibber. _
Dr. Byron wants it distinciy under
stood that he has not ‘‘swapped off”
Baby Ruth.
The man who can not lead and will
uotbe lead is in a kind of quandary, to
put it mildly, but to bo plain about it,
he is a self conceited God forsaken fool.
Mr. Walter Mooro, of Jackson, spent
Saturday and Sunday with iris brothers
Prof. J. W, and Mr. Threatt Moore, of
this place.—Jasper Cos. News.
Among other things one of the best
sigus >f better times ahead that we kuow
of is am atch that we learn that has been
agreed upon between a beautiful young
lady of Jackson and a gallant young
man of 25 summers.
Rey. J. A. Eakes is continually visit
ing the people of Jenkinsburg, and they
are always glad to see him, but we learn
that there is a pretty black eyed widow
wdio is a member at Engle’s chapel that
has a wonderful influence on the fre
quency of these visits. That is all right
and we hope it will be a he.
Those wishing to run their
business on the cash system an
other year, can b >rrow money on
farm and city property from
Frank Z. Curry at eight per cent
interest
Dr. Gardner preached a very able and
feeling sermon on the seven sayings of
Christ on the cross, Sunday at eleven
and had a reading on baptism at 7in
the evening. The reading was very in
teresting as well as convincing and the
house and gallery was crowded to suffo
cation. Some sweet little boys and girls
and older ones took the rite of baptism
which was very prettily administered by
the paster. Sunday was a grand day at
the Baptist church and everybody
seemed to be in the right spirit to enjoy
it* May we have more sucli days.
OLOTHIJNG-.
What Kept Them Up.
Customer—“how much be them pants anyway?”
Clerk—“ Three seventy-five.”
Customer—“ Yep, same old price, ’taters worth half what they
useter be, cotton way down to nothing, butter down, eggs
down. I’d just like ter know what keeps pants up?”
Clerk—“ Suspenders, perhaps.”
That old man went out muttering that he “guessed it was safety
p:us in some cases.” If that old man- had only called on
Mack Barfield he’d never left without the pants, as we bought
our clothing late and 25 per cent under manufacturers cost,
and we can sell them for what other merchants paid for them.
