THE BUTTS COUNTY FAIR
A l-'air Butts county had on courthouse
square,
When every one and his grand-daddy
was there.
It rained, and rained and the sun
would not peep
On the decorations. The colors run
and the mud was deep.
At last in despair the parade they did
have,
All the beautiful cars, riders and driv
ers so fair;
How much 1 would like to describe
each car,
But it has been a bone of contention,
so far.
Who really deserved the prize—that is
all Wright,
The judges, commercial travelers, de
parted :\t night.
The floats dressed, from corsets down
to boots;
With children and yellow butterflies
for fashion books;
A beautiful star tilled with life’s sweet
est blessings:
W. C. T. U., a pyramid of beauties
just resting;
U. L>. C., Daughters of the South, in
red and white,
Representing a lost cause, we thought
right;
Civic Improvement in while and green
so fair,
We would be so glad to see a block off
the Square;
D. A. R’s, Daughters of Revolutionary
fame;
Then Johnson’s living pictures came
With God’s best jewels set in the frame.
The beautiful Coca-Cola float with au
tumn leaves;
The Umpire Buggy Cos., with ail the
looks to please,
So shiny and bright—even the shippers
there;
The littie Pepperton float beautiful
without a care;
Mr. Watkins, ah, shucks, who has
made corn enough;
The bright littie Thurston twins found
it rough
To stay on top a wagon and do black
smith work.
The National Banks were there in all
their glory
With Uncle Sam's Stars and Stripes to
tell the story.
The Jasmine Dairy, all in white so fair,
Pure cream and milk for children you
gel there;
Union Warehouse, cotton up so high,
Leave it there, you will And it nigh;
Then the ear with all the stuff raised
at home,
At his house you don’t have to forage
or roam.
To Kinard’s “Butter Nut Bread” I
can’t find a rhyme;
But Ido know the boy and the goat
were the best in the line,
“Pulling for Dixie Highway” through
mud and slime.
To the Band, who seemed so tired and
weary,
Who practiced all the time “Tipperary ”
Butts Lumber Cos. with their clean,
yellow shavings,
South Georgia pine they will sell you
at a saving.
Ifinniy hurry I have forgotten any
float,
Oh, dear Jackson; don’t get my goat.
They had a baby contest and not
enough prizes,
The doctor did his best but trouble was
rising;
Another was called in, still nothing de
cided.
They may all get over it, but will nev
er look the same.
The Fancy Work came in for its share;
For a more beautiful display you would
not care.
Alas; and alas; for the poor misguided
judges
It was hard to decide, and all the
fusses
Hither and too, they were pushing and
rushing
To find ttie poor judges and give them
a c
Now to the higher arts we will turn;
Pictures and China painting—so much
to learn
So few who know and can judge art,
Of technics, of beauty, and coloring a
part.
To each and every school was due a
share
Of praise and prizes at Butts County
Fair.
Parent-Teachers Association, with
sandwiches and coffee,
Doing a noble work, and will take all
money offered.
The Agricultural display was truly
rare, ,
Mep *ud woman competing there.
The woman deserved the prize; every
ope singing
Honor and praises to energetic Mrs.
.singtey.

py and bright;
Rah! rah! rah! Canning Club Girls
were there all right.
Mr. Merck was there with his useful
and beautiful display,
Will read your meter right in spile of
what you say.
To Mr. Matty McMichael—
Much honor is due, who had a wel
come, a jolly greeting;
To every one, a smile, a slap, a hand
shake on meeting.
To the Marshal of Parade, Mr. Mays,
On his prancing nay, thanks and all
praise;
To the City Marshals, Thornton and
Pope,
Better government and behavior was
the dope.
To the Bosses who will have to carry
their cross
For time and eternity, with their loss,
And swear “never again” a fair in all
creation;
No, “never again” until they raise an
other generation.
Now laying all joking, fair Jackson,
aside,
Pull together, let not jealousy and envy
abide
In a town so fair, where you have many
times
Failed in your endeavors; being of dif
ferent minds, ✓
None willing to make concessions: all
bosses,
putting upon the silent ones mistakes
and losses;
As. Elbert Hubbard would say—“ Here
endeth the preachment.”
