HOW TO LIVE WITH
THE BOLL WEEVIL
A practical farmer and man of
education, now in the service of
the Department of Agriculture
of the United States, was asked
if it were possible to grow as
much cotton with boll weevil as
without it, and he answered,
“Yes and no. No, if the farming
methods now in vogue are fol
His conversation was so inter
esting that we publish it for the
benefit of everybody.
“For the first year," he said,
“the weevil does not do much
damage. The second year and
the third year he works devas
tation. About the fourth year
the farmer begins to learn how
to live with him.
“I knew a farmer who grew
700 bales of cotton on 700 acres
of land near Shreveport. The
weevil cut his yield down to 100
bales. Two years later the far
mer got his yield back to 700
“There is a way of living with
the boll weevil and here it is:
Begin this year to make next
year’s crop. This fall I would
sacrifice some of the late cotton
and immediately burn all the
stalks and all the trash on the
“I would do this to deprive the
boll weevil of a protected home
during the winter.
“Then I would break the land.
“Then I would break the land
again in February.
“Then I would plant three
weeks before the normal time or
just as soon as I could.
“I would have the rows six
feet apart, or wide enough so as
to insure plenty of sunshine on
“I would chop the cotton out
as soon as possible and then be
gin to plow. l would go over
that cotton every ten days as
long as it is safe to plow cotton.
“That is what the successful

keeping the soil clean, good pre
paration for planting and rapid
and frequent cultivation." —Ex.
LOCATING THE TROUBLE
When one is suffering from backache,
rheumatism, lumbago, biliousness,
sharp pains, sore muscles and stiff
joints it is not always easy to locate
the source of trouble, but nine times
out of ten it can be traced to overwork
ed, weakened or diseased kidneys.

A program of “Safe Farming”
for the South is outlined in a cir
cular which the United States
Department of Agriculture has
sent to bankers, business men
and farmers in the Cotton States.
The safety measures recom
mended are as follows:
First: Produce a home garden
for every family on the farm, the
year round, paving special atten
tion to a plot of Irish or sweet po
tatoes sufficient to supply the
family with food of this character.
Where feasible, have a patch of
sorghum or other cane to produce
syrup for the family.
Second: Produce the corn neces
sary to support all of the people
on the farm and the live stock,
with absolute safety.
Third: Produce the necessary
oats and other small grain to sup
plement the corn as food. Pay
attention to winter grazing.
Fourth: Produce hay and for
age from some forage crop suffi
cient to supply all of the live
stock on the farm. Use legumes
such as clover, cowpeas, velvet
beans, soy beans and alfalfa for
the production of hay and to en
rich the soil with nitrogen and
Fifth: Produce the meat neces
sary to supply the people, through
increased attention to poultry and
hogs, especially. Plan to increase
gradually the number of cattle
and other live stock so as to have
sufficient number to consume the
waste products of the farm and
make the waste lands productive.
Sixth: After all of these things
have been amply provided for,
produce cotton for the market.
