THE JACKSON PROGRESS-ARGUS Vol 44 —No- 40 THIRD ANNUAL SESSION BUTTS COUNTY FAIR OPENS OCT. 10 T -Big Week of Entertainment And Amusement For Ali The People , - Large Attendance Is Assured Whole Week —Displays Will Be Many And Varied—High Class Attract ions Secured—Aeroplane Flight Daily And Fire works Every Night—Many Big Features For Fair Everything is being rapidly put in readiness for the third annual session of the Butts County Fair., which begins here Tuesday, Get. 10 and lasts for four days, clos ing at midnight Friday, Oct. 13. From the point of interest, at tendance and number and variety mj; exhibits, -this promises to be the most successful fair ever held in Butts.eonnty. The local fair will also rank wiih the best coun ty fairs in the country. A great many farmers will have exhibits of agricultural pro ducts and live stock and the dis plays of fanay work and needle icraft in the 'Woman’s Depart ment, the products of the Corn tjjhib and Canning Club members •will be worth going miles to see. Premiums aracunting to be tween S6OO and ;isß9o are offered in the various departments. Ev ery premium wall he paid in cash without exception. The official premium list and are being published this week. A number of high -class shows and concessions a-re booked and will be a live midway. The aeroplane flights, which will be given twice daily, will be one of the drawing cards of the fair. This feature will attract people for miles around. The fireworks display has al ready arrived and will be install ed in time for the big show. The shows will begin to -arrive Sunday and wall be set up Mon day. The automobile tour Friday af ternoon, when a number of cities this section will be visited and literature about the fair distribu ted, will wind up a successful and effective advertising campaign. A large number of cars are ex pected to go on this boosting trip. The automobile parade Tues day has aroused wide interest, and cars from far and near will be in line. The parade will be principal streets of Jack son, beginning at 10:30, and will end at the fair grounds at 11:30. Mr. S. H. Mays will act as mar- of the parade. Entrance to the fair grounds will be by the west gate and exit will be through the east gate. Stores attracively decorated in bunting and flags add a touch of color and act as a stimulus to the fair spirit. Everybody is reques ted t r decorate for the fair. A big* week of frolic and fun, of education and amusement is ahead and everybody and the ctnldren are coming to Jackson to the Butts outiniy mil 1 QciOloir 10 to 13. lanl7 C KSON, GEORGIA, OCTOBER 6, 1916 KG FREE PASSES ALLOWED AT THE BUTTS COUNTY FAIR Everybody Who Enters Grounds Must Pay Admission The officers and directors of the Butts County Fair Associa tion have decided not to issue any free passes to the fair which will open here next week. This rule will apply to all. The officers, managers and superintendents will pay their admission just like all others. The officers desire above all else to make the fair a financ’a 1 success. This action is in line with the other leading fairs. Once the gap were let down, it would be hard to keep from an in discriminate use of free passes. A large number of people have worked hard and unselfishly for the fair and it would be hard to say who is entitled to passes and who is not. Therefore, it was decided to abolish passes entirely. It is believed this rule will meet with the approval of the stock h)lders and the public. HON. J. R. SMITH TO SPEAK AT BUTTS FAIR Hon. J. R. Smith, former Buts countv resident and now 7 promi nent Atlanta merchant and cap ; - talist, has accepted an invitation to deliver an address at the fair next week. His address will be a feature of the Home Coming exercises Tuesday. Mr. Smith wires: "In accept ing permit me thank you and through you the Fair Association for their very kind invitation. Since I am privileged to select my own subject, it will be mv purpose to speak of a nation with a clean and orderly house.” The public is cordially invited to come out and hear Mr. Smith. JACKSON RIFLES INVITED TO ATTEND HOME COMING Planned to Make Military Day A Big Event of F&ir The Jackson Rifles, now sta tioned at Camp Harris in Macon, have been invited to attend the Home Coining exercises at the Butts County Fair. THAXTON Prominent Young Man is Appendicitis Victim SICK ONLY SHORT TIME His Passing Caine as Shock to Scores of Friends — Body lyaid to Rest Here Tuesday Afternoon The deatli of Mr. 11. C. Thux ton which occurred in Atlanta Monday morning at 5 o’clock, was a painful shock to his family and hundreds of friends. Death was caused by appendicitis for which he underwent an operation Saturday. Mr. Thaxton was sick only a few days. Saturday morning he was taken to Atlanta for an op eration in the hope of saving his life, but the disease could not be arrested and tle final summons came at an early hour Monday. The suddenness of his passing adds to the shock. Mr. Thaxton was a splendid young man, popular with his as sociates. honest, ambitious and a hard worker. A native of Butts county and 31 years of age, Mr. Thaxton had held a number of responsible positions. He for merly worked on Jackson papers as a printer, was with Etheridge, Smith & Company for several seasons, was later a traveling salesman and until stricken with his final illness was manager of Smith & Company’s store at Pep perton. A young man of sterling worth and fine character, Mr. Thaxton’s untimely death will be widely regretted. He is survived by his wife, who was Miss Blanche Barnes before her marriage; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Thaxton and five sisters, Misses Maude, Es telle, Kate, Effie and Jewell Thax ton, of Atlanta; two brothers, Messrs. R. R. Thaxton. of Jack son, and M. F. Thaxton, of Mon ticello. The body was brought to Jack son Monday night and the funer al was held at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon from the First Baptist church. Dr. Robert VanDeven ter conducted the service. The funeral was largely attended and many beautiful floral offerings attested the esteem in which the deceased was held. Interment was in the City Cemetery. commanding department of the East, Governors Island. N. Y. His answer is now being awaited. Death of Infant The eleven-months-old infant of Mr. and Mrs. Ward Jenkins, of near Cork, died Monday after noon and the funeral was held at Sandy Creek at 3 o’clock Tues day afternoon. Rev. W. 0 Sharp c .nducted the service and inter n ent was in the Sandy Creek emetery. RULES GOVERNING BUTTS COUNTY FAIR ANNOUNCED Premium List Contains Valuable Prizes For Butts County Citizens GENERAL RULES Space and entries free, unless otherwise specified in rules governing certain depart ments. Entry blanks may be had on application to the Secretary. Except as otherwise provided for by spo* cial rules governing certain departments, all exhibits MUST be in place and fully installed by 6 o’clock P. M., Monday. October 9, other wise they Will receive no attention from aw a i din g corn mi t tees. The Fair will open at ten o’clock A. M., Tuesday. October 10, and will close at mid night. Friday, October 13, 1916. After the opening day the gates will he opened at 8 A. M. and remain open until 12 P. M. daily. All exhibits entered for competition shall be subject to the control of the Superinten dent pf the Department in which they are exhibited. Exhibition will be confined to Butts county. The Association does everything it can to protect exhibits, but in no case will it be re sponsible for loss or damage that may occur to them. Concerning Exhibits Under no circumstances will any freight or express charges be paid by the association. Exhibitors may sell at their respective stands any article displayed, to be delivered to the purchaser at the close of the Fair. If it is ascertained that an exhibitor has made or caused to be made, a false statement in regard to any animal or article exhibited, or if anv exhibitor shall attemp to interfere with the judges in the performance of their duties he shall be excluded from competition or from exhibiting on the grounds of the As sociation. The management reserves the right to de cline any entry. Entries Unless otherwise specified in rules govern ing certain departments, all entries close on Monday, October 9, 1916. Intending exhibitors shall write plainly on the entry blanks the Department and number of the prize offered for the article they wish to enter, using the exact wording of the pre mium list, and must give their post office ad dress Exhibitors will save themselves and the of fice force of the Association much time by attending to these directions, and preparing their blanks before proceeding to make entries. Unless otherwise specified in rules govern ing departments, articles must be on the grounds by Monday, October 9, and shall not be removed before Friday, October, 13. Space Exhibitors are urged to file their applica tions for space with the Secretary as early as possible. Awards # No one will be allowed to act as judge in a depaitment or ring in which he exhibits. No premium will be awarded when the ex hibit is unworthy, though there be no compe tition. Premiums will not be paid according to rib bons, but by awards shown in the judges book, and the judges record shall be final. Should doubt arise as to the regularity of an entry, or any other important matter, which the judge feels incompetent to decide, he shall at once report same to the Superin tendent of the Department, who shall in turn bring the matter to the attention of the Gen era! Manager. Judges Judges are instructed that if they shall have good reasons to believe that any exhib itor, by false entry or otherwise, attempts to deceive the judges or the public, and obtain a premium by misrepresentation, they shall re port the fact at once to the Superintendent of the Department, who shall report the matter at once to the General Manager for action by the directors.
