GRASSHOPPER FAITH
And there we saw the giants,
the sons of Anak, which come of
the giants: and we were in our
own sight as grasshoppers, and
so we were in their sight.” Num
bers 13:33.
Please observe that these men
were the leaders from the tribes
of Israel who had been sent to
spy out the new land that the
Lord was going to give Israel.
The real test of their faith had
come. The land was before them
and God had promised that he
would be with them. He had dem
onstrated His presence with them
all through the wilderness wan
derings up to this time. He had
demonstrated his persence and
concern in various ways—in de
liverance across the Red Sea, in
leading them as a pillow of fire
by night and a cloud by day.
Now was the time come to claim
the promise, but 10, the faith of
Israel’s leaders was not ready to
claim it. They reported on all of
the good things that the land
possessed. It was truly a land

flowing with milk and honey, a
very rich and productive land,
but the giants were there, it was
possessed by the enemies of God’s
people. The enemies had to be
overcome. Only Caleb and Joshua
overcome. Only Cabel and Jeshua
had the faith to believe that they
could be overcome. The other ten
spies saw themselves as grass
hoppers unable to carry out the
Lord’s command. They felt that
God’s enemies were stronger than
God’s people. This fear on their
part caused the enemy to see
them as grasshoppers also accord
ing to our text. It must be re
membered that these who were
the enemies of God’s people were
considered the enemies of God
in the Old Testament.
The tragic note in our text is
that these men who were leaders
of God’s people and who had
the promise of victory from the
Lord, feared that God’s enemies
were stronger than they, thus
their lament, “We were grass
hoppers in our own sight, and
so we were in their sight.”
Is it not deplorable when those
who call themselves Christians,
witnesses and ambassadors allow
the forces of evil to frighten
them into feeling themselves as
grasshoppers. Is it not sad that
those who have the promise of
the power of the Holy Spirit are
II bring your prescriptio J.S.I
frightened into doing nothing or
even fleeing from the forces of
evil that would corrupt and over
> run our society? Many are saying
today that we are as grasshoppers
in the sight of the giant of Com
munism, or the Giant of Secular
ism or the Giant of legalized al
cohol. Many sit by and say, “Oh,
I’m just a little ol’ grasshopper
and can’t do anything about it,”
and don’t. It is no wonder that
we give God’s enemies the im
pression that we are only grass
hoppers. When we see ourselves
as grasshoppers, the enemy will
also see us as such. Just remem
ber Christian Friend, you are not
a grasshopper, you are a member
of the King’s army. You can
claim the presence of the Lord
against the foes of the Lord.

Ten minutes early! The service of worship begins at eleven, and the
Anderson family has had time to saunter a little . . . gratefully aware of
the glorious autumn morning and the serene beauty of their church build
ing, Afterwards, like Christians the world over, they will go home refreshed
and inspired by God’s Word, ready to meet whatever the week may bring.
Turning from self-service to God’s service is never easy, but it is im
measurably worthwhile. When our hearts are completely God-centered, all
other concerns fall into their proper places ... and our lives become richer
and more significant than our minds can imagine.
“Everything else can wait . . . but your search for God cannot wait."
There is still time. Come to church this Sunday and share in the bounty of
His strengthening love. It is yours for the asking.
