Poppies To Be
Sold Here On
November 9th
The American Legion Auxili
ary will sponsor Poppy Day on
Saturday, November 9th.
Volunteer workers will be on
the streets to distribute poppies.
As the day for the wearing of
the poppy draws near, it is well
to emphasize the significance of
the little flower.
L'irst, it is to express rever
ence for the men who have died
in the wars.
Second, making the poppies
gives employment to hundreds
of disabled veterans, enabling
them to earn something toward
the support of themselves and
their families.
Third, funds derived from dis
tribution of poppies are used for
rehabilitation and child welfare
work of the American Legion and
Auxiliary.
Greet volunteer workers No
vember 9th with a smile and a
liberal contribution.

the fair is the reason. It re

However, this is time well

It gives them an opportunity to
show and exhibit the things they
have been doing. It helps to de

essential in the process of grow

The fair was bigger and bet

Watch for Army worm*
Farmers with small grain and
winter grazing should be on the
lookout for fall armyworms.
These crops especially new
stands can be destroyed if
large numbers of these insects
are present. So, until frost, in
spect your fields regularly.
If armyworms are found, you
may need to treat with insecti
cides to save your crops.
Sevin at the rate of 1 to 1 %

When using any pesticide, be
sure to follow precautions on the
label.
Weed* and Grasses
For as long as peaches have
been grown in Georgia, peach
orchards have been cultivated.
The only reason for this cultiva
tion was to control weeds and
grasses.

shed on the subject. It is be
lieved that harrowing does only
harm —by cutting the roots of
the trees. The uptake of water
and nutrients is limited, and
when this happens, the trees are
not able to manufacture and store
enough food to take them through
the winter in a healthy condition.
In addition, the trees are limited
in their ability to produce a crop
of large, colorful, quality fruit.
C. D. Spivey, one of our Ex
tension horticulturists, says har
rowing and the damage it does
may contribute to the short life
of our peach trees.
And anyway, we now have
chemicals that do an excellent job
of controlling weeds and grasses.
These should be used to replace
deep cultivation.
