First Tie Of
Season Marks
Grid Contest
Eleven gridiron prophets, rising
head and shoulders above their
contemporaries, waded through a
tough weekend of prognosticating
with flying colors, missing only
two games each, but when the
all-important points were tabu
lated, Mrs. Robert Jones of At
lanta won the SIO.OO cash prize
for first place with 202 points.
For the first time this season,
three contestants tied for second
place with the $5.00 cash prize
to be divided among Ed Galloway
of Jenkinsburg, Mrs. T. E. Rob
ison, Jr. of Jackson, and Pam
Anderson of Jackson with 218
points each.
Others missing only two games
and their point totals were Mrs.
Whit Nelson, 210; Keith Riles,
242; R. P. Newton, 252; J. P.
Roberts, 262; Mrs. Emory Spen
cer, 263; Mike Duke, 209; and
Marion Dorner, 318.
Missing only three games were
Rundy Freeman, Bill Hoard,
Teena Norsworthy, Sabina Pace,
Phyllis Davis, Julius Batchelor,
John McKemie of Griffin, Dot
Pace, Debbie Nelson, Tommy
Carmichael, Mike Hudgens, W. H.
Craig of Locust Grove, Mrs. Fel
ton Thompson, Janie Carmichael,
Paul Nail of Rarnesville, Bobby
Stephens, Troy H. Norsworthy,
Johnny Awtry, Mrs. Jeanette
Stephens, Bonnie Spencer, Phil
lip E. Clark, Mrs. Evelyn Awtry,
Sidney Galloway, Emily Carr,
Roy Beall, Joe Sellers, Mrs. R.
G. Coker, Mrs. Hugh Mallet,
Robert Jones, Nancy Beall, Harry
Ridgeway, Mrs. Curtis Kelley,
Martin Ridgeway, Mrs. T. A.
Carmichael.
Games causing the most trouble
were Tampa’s 24-17 win over
Mississippi State; Houston’s 29-7
decision of Mississippi, an and
Brown’s 27-19 victory over Col
gate. Many prognosticators fa
vored Texas Tech over SMU and
North Carolina over Wake Forest.
A great majority picked correct
ly on the Georgia-Kentucky and
Tech-Tulane games.
A large number of contestants
entered the contest last week for
the first time with the judges
emphasizing the importance of
some deliberation before picking
scores. As an illustration, some
of the 11 contestants who tied
for first before the scores were
computed missed one game by 68
points, another by 65, and another
by 63.
The contest, sponsosed by Al
len’s Hom-Ond Food Store, Econ-
O-Way Laundries, Jackson Na
tional Bank, and City Pharmacy,
has four weeks to run before the
collegiate grid season runs its
course. Entry blanks may be ob
tained at any of the above four
sponsors and must be placed in
boxes at the sponsors on or be
fore noon the day the games are
to be played.

Green Hornets
Escape Monroe
By 7-0 Score
The Green Hornets fought for
their undefeated and unscored on
lives Saturday night against Mon
roe in Monroe and save for a
monumental scare they escaped
with a 7-0 victory and their goal
line still unsullied.
The 95 lb. team, sponsored
by Settle & Robison and coached
by Ernest and Skeeter Biles,
found Monroe their most formid
able opponent by far. The Hor
nets finally pushed across a score
late in the game with Andy
ICrumbley tallying on a 4-yard
run. Darrell Summers added the
extra point. The Monroe team
was composed of 12 and under
boys, most in the 115 lb. class.
