Three Jackson Men Killed In
Monroe Crash Early Wednesday
Three widely known Butts
County residents were believed
instantly killed early Wednesday
morning in Monroe County when
the car in which they were driv
ing to Macon drove into and un
der the rear of a gravel truck on
Georgia Highway 87 about a mile
north of the Bibb-Monroe County
line.
Killed in the tragic accident
that stunned the entire commu
nity were William Pierson (Pete)
Brooks, 59, of Route 3, Jackson;
Herman L. Cawthon, 52, of Route
3, Jackson; and Joseph Lafayette
Reeves, 45, of Route 4, Jackson.
The three men were employed by
Overnite Transportation Com
pany in Macon and were enroute
to their place of employment
when the fatal accident occurred
about dawn.
The mishap was investigated
by a trooper from the Griffin
Patrol headquarters. It was re
ported in Jackson later Wednes
day that the car involved in the
(rash belonged to Mr. Reeves and
it was assumed that he was the
driver.
Mr. Brooks was born in Butts
County, the son of Mr. George
W. Brooks and Mrs. Clara Lynch
Brooks. He was a member of
Liberty Baptist Church and had
been employed by Overnite for
several years.
Mr. Brooks is survived by his
wife, Mrs. Jenny Clyde Tingle
Brooks; two daughters, Mrs.
Lewis Weldon of Jackson and
Mrs. Jean Campbell of Tampa,
Fla.; a son, William T. Brooks
of Houston, Texas; two sisters,
Miss Ora Belle Brooks of Hilltop
Nursing Home, Forsyth, and
Mrs. Sally May Maddox of Jack
son; seven grandchilden.
Funeral services for Mr. Brooks
will be conducted Thursday after
noon at 3 o’clock from the
Chapel of Haisten Funeral Home
with Rev. T. R. Scott, Rev. Jim
my Smith and Rev. George Bos
tick officiating. Interment will be
in the Liberty Baptist Church
Cemetery.

Polk, G. Carter Moore, Jerome
Washington, Wendell Spencer.
Mr. Cawthon was a native of
Henry County and for many
years had served as Deacon and
Sunday School teacher of the
Macedonia Eapitst Church. He
was son of Mr. Ollie Cawthon
and Mrs. Vassa Mason Cawthon.
Surviving Mr. Cawthon are his
wife, Mrs. Grace Thompson Caw
thon, Jackson; a daughter, Mrs.
I.inda Dianne Kuhn of Locust
Grove; a son, Larry Franklin
Cawthon of Locust Grove; two
grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs.
Frances Johnson and Mrs. Chris
tine Heinie, both of Atlanta.
Funeral services for Mr. Caw
thon will be held Thursday after
noon at two o'clock at Macedonia
Baptist Church. Rev. R. W. Jenk
ins. pastor, assisted by Rev. Bill
Thomas and Rev. T. H. Wilder,
former pastors, will officiate.
Haisten Funeral Home is in
charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers will be Otho Mor
gan, Lawrence Morgan, Oscar
Young, Lewis Cawthon, Joel Caw
thon, Harold Standard.
Born in Butts County, Mr.
Reeves was the son of Mrs. Eliz
abeth Hale Reeves and the late
Mr. Ezra J. Reeves. He was a
member of Liberty Baptist
Church.
Mr. Reeves is survived by his
wife, Mrs. Mary Allene Faulkner
Reeves, Jackson; one daughter,
Mrs. Roy Chesser of Atlanta; two
sons, Ronnie Reeves and Mike
Reeves, both of Jackson; moth
er, Mrs. Elizabeth Hale Reeves
of Macon and Jackson; a brothef,
Wayne W. Reeves of Jackson;
two grandchildren; several nieces
and nephews.
Funeral services for Mr.
Reeves will be held at Haisten’s
Chapel Thursday afternoon at
4:30 o’clock with Rev. Joe Faulk
ner and Rev. George Bostick offi
ciating. Interment will be in Li
berty Baptist Church Cemetery.

Couch, Paul Reeves Jr., Billy

Sister of Mrs.
Wade Died
Unexpectedly
Mrs. Otis Holcomb, 39, of
Austell, sister of Mrs. M. E.
Wade Sr., of Jackson, died unex
pectedly January Ist in Sheffield,
Alabama while on a trip with her
husband who is a salesman. Her
death, according to information
received here, was believed at
tributable to a heart attack.
Funeral services for Mrs. Hol
comb, the former Virginia Akins,
were held Friday, January 3rd,
at two o’clock from White Col
umns Chapel with Gene Davis’
Funeral Home in charge of ar
rangements. Interment was in
Barber Cemetery.
Mrs. Holcomb is survived by
her husband, Mrs. Otis J. Hol
comb, Austell; a daughter, Mrs.
J. R. Campbell of Douglasville;
a son, Wayne Holcomb of Aus
tell; mother, Mrs. Ada Akins of
Smyrna; four sisters, Mrs. Jack
Etheridge of Mableton, Mrs. M.
E. Wade Sr. of Jackson, Mrs. J.
R. Moreland of Decatur, Mrs. W.
F. Edmonds of Rome; two broth
ers, J. T. Akins of Smyrna and D‘.

home Monday from Sylvan Grove
Hospital where she had suffered
with Flu. We hope for her an
early recovery.

holidays with their grandparents,

Marshall Baker, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Neal Baker, spent 15
days at home during the holidays.
He is attending Officer Candidate
Training School at Fort Benning.

Father of Mrs.
C. W. Shields
Died Dec. 30
The many Jackson friends of
Mrs. C. W. Shields regret to learn
of the death of her father, Mr.
Joseph W. Keliehor, which oc
curred Monday, December 30th,
in an Enid, Oklahoma hospital.
Mr. Keliehor, 81, resided at
819 West State Street in Enid.
He was born in Williamson Coun
ty, Texas, moving to Woodward,
Oklahoma in 1926 and to Enid in
1930. He was a member of St.
Francis Catholic Church.
A Rosary was recited at 7:30
p. m. January Ist in the chapel of
Darnall Funeral Home. Final
rites were conducted at 10 a. m.
Thursday, January 2nd, in St.
Francis Xavier Church with Rev.
James Zanmeyer officiating. In
terment followed in Memorial
Park Cemetery under the direc
tion of Darnall’s.
Mr. Keliehor is survived by his
wife, Mrs. Lucille Alice Keliehor
of Enid, Oklahoma; two daugh
ters, Mrs. Harry Mauldin of At
lanta, Ga., and Mrs. C. W. Shields
of Jackson, Ga.; two sons, Joseph
W. Keliehor of Stockton, Calif.,
and William D. Keliehor of Se
attle, Wash.; four grandchildren
and one great-grandchild.

Mrs. Alma Harmon left Tues
day for her home in Miami Beach,
Florida following a visit during
the holidays with her daughter,
Mrs. John Schroeder, Mr. Schroe
der, Bill and Kim. Mr. Schroeder
carried his mother-in-law home

White, Jed and Deidra Jinks of
Jackson ,Mr. and Mrs. Charlie

visited Mr. and Mrs. Edward
Harmon of Smyrna during the
holidays.
Mrs. Howard Jolly was admit
ted Tuesday to Griffin-Spalding
County Hospital. She suffered
burns to her legs last week by
overturning scalding water.

Miss Virginia Coker spent sev
eral days at home with her par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Coker.
She is recuperating from a severe
case of Flu.
Mr. R. A. Allen was confined
to his home last week with Flu.
We are glad to see him out again.
Visiting Mr. and Mrs. H. G.
Harris on Sunday were Mrs. H.
S. Peek, Mrs. Ruby Walker, and
Mrs. Lois Peebles, all of Macon.
Mr. Bobby Letson is confined
to bed this week with Flu. We
hope for him an early recovery.

T. Grady Brooks
Died Wednesday
Mr. Thomas Grady Brooks, 78,
one of Flovilla’s most prominent
citizens, died Wednesday morning
about 10:45 o’clock at Macon
Hospital following a lengthy peri
od of declining health. He had
been hospitalized during his last
illness about two weeks.
A native of Spalding County,
Mr. Brooks was the son of Mr.
John Brooks and Mrs. Sara Eliz
abeth Burnette Brooks. A widely
known retired farmer and carpen
ter, Mr. Brooks served the City
of Flovilla for a long number of
years in the post of councilman,
tax collector and policeman. He
was a member of the Flovilla
Methodist Church and a Mason.
Funeral services will be con
ducted Thursday afternoon, Jan
uary 9th, at 2 o’clock from the
Chapel of Haisten Funeral Home
in Jackson with the Rev. Ed Gal
loway, pastor of the Jenkinsburg
Charge and Rev. Don Harp, a for
mer pastor, officiating. Inter
ment will be in the Jackson City
Cemetery with Haisten Funeral
Home in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Brooks is survived by his
wife, Mrs. Mab ell Maddux
Brooks of Flovilla; seven daugh
ters, Mrs. Powell Colwell of Grif
fin, Mrs. Spencer Johnson of In
dian Springs, Mrs. W. H. Caw

Rites Saturday
For Mrs. Silas
Mrs. T. L. Silas, 76, of Jack
sonville, Florida, died Friday
morning, January 3rd, at St.
Luke’s Hospital in Jacksonville.
She had been in declining health
for the past year.
Funeral services were conduc
ted Saturday afternoon with Dr.
E. Nash Philpot officiating.
Hardage and Sons were in charge
of arrangements.
A native of Jones County, Mrs.
Silas, the former Hazel Kingman,
was the daughter of Mr. R. H.
Kingman, Sr. and Mrs. Carrie
Gibson Kingman.
Survivors include her husband,
Mr. T. L. Silas Sr. of Jackson
ville, Fla.; two sons, C. K. Silas
and Ralph M. Silas, both of Jack
sonville; three daughters, Mrs.
Mary Ernst of Juno Beach, Fla.,
Mrs. Frances Faulkner of Win

James T. Wadkins, 66, of Rich
mond, Virginia, formerly of At
lanta, were held Thursday, Jan
uary 2nd, at the Southside Bap
tist Church in Richmond. Burial
was in Richmond.
Mrs. Wadkins, the former
Jesse Cleveland of Locust Grove,
died Monday, December 30th, in
a Richmond hospital. She was a
member of the Southside Baptist
Church in Richmond.
Survivors include her husband;
two sons, Jerry Wadkins, Rich
mond, and James Wadkins Jr.,
Portsmouth; five sisters, Mrs.
Margaret Rosser, Hapeville; Mrs.
Marvin Davis, Avondale Estates;
