THE SIN OF PROFANITY
Profanity is a very common sin
of this day. It seems that we are
becoming part of the most pro
fane nation upon the earth.
I heard the story of a mission
ary who stepped off a boat in
New York City one day, bringing
with him a man fresh from heath
enism. A man swore and the mis
sionary stopped him and said,
“Please, sir, do not swear. I have
with me a heathen here and this
is the first time he ever heard
God’s name taken in vain.”
I have been on street cars,
buses and railroad trains, and
have heard God’s name in vain in
such a vile way, until my patience
revolted, and I have promised
God that wherever I go, I am
going to condemn them in no un
certain way, this useless sin; this
vile, vulgar, useless, sinful habit.
Someone has given ten reas
ons against profanity. I want to
quote them just here: It is un
natural. It is'irrational. It is with
out excuse. It is unprofitable. It
is corrupting. It is unmanly. It
is ungentlemanly. It is defiant.
It is hazardous. It is soul-destruc
tive.
This person also says when one
swears he does ten things: He
breaks the comandment of God.
He violates the Law of the I,and.
He transgresses the Rule of Good
Manners. He outrages decency.
He insults good people. He pro
fanes sacred things He shows
bad breeding. He dishonors his
parents. He does what, if he has
a conscience, he will be ashamed
of. He does what he will regret.
I have seen men, who it seemed
to me, had in their blood a dis
position to commit certain sins;
born with a thirst for strong
drink, or with a tendency to steul,
but 1 seriously doubt if one has
ever been born with a cussing
disposition.
Have you ever noticed how ir
rational a man who swears is? He
swears at his friends; swears at
his enemies; swears when he is
mad; swears when he is glad. One
writer pictures the devil fishing
for sinners. He uses various baits
to allure his prey, but when he
wants to catch a cusser he uses
the bare hook. The profane man
swears without cause. It is pos
sible that a man is born with an
appetite for alcohol, or with a dis
position to commit certain sins.
Hut no man was ever born a cus
sing creature. Cursing is the

MRS. T. H. PRICE
Visiting with the Herschel Har
rises over the weekend were Mr.
| and Mrs. Joe Harris and children,
!Mrs. J. T. Harris and John, Mr.
and Mrs. Wesley Harris and Mr.
and Mrs. William Harris.
We are glad to see Mr. and
'.Mrs. F. S. Bohannon out again
after being confined several
weeks with a round of the flu.
Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Connell of
Warner Robins and Mr. and Mrs.
Randolph Sims and Bobby of
McDonough visited Mr. and Mrs.
T. R. Sims on Sunday.
Mr. Jack Leverette spent the
weekend with his mother, Mrs.
J. I. Leverette.
Mrs. Eva Mae Polk visited Mr.
and Mrs. Melvin Washington, Mr.
and Mrs. R. L. Evans, Mr. and
Mrs. G. M. Washington, all of
shriveled fruit of a depraved
brain.
It is the vulgar expression from
a heart that is vile, ugly, and
venomous.
Cursing is ungentlemanly. Be
cause men realize this, their oaths
are silenced in the presence of
ladies and ministers of the Gos
pel.
Cursing reveals ignorance. The
English language is filled with
strong descriptive adjectives. Our
great statesmen have found it
quite useful as a medium of ex
pression. But men who are
limited in their vocabulary have
to fill in the gaps left by their
ignorance with cuss words.
It is degrading to swear. It
drags God down to the level of
man. It exalts man above God. It
hardens the hearts of those who
hear it and brings contempt from
those who have character. I have
just as much right to spray
poison gas in your home as you
have to befoul the air that I
breathe with profanity.
Robert G. Ingersoll, an infi
del, said, “The man who swears
is either very wicked or very
foolish.” If there is no God, then
you are wasting your breath, and
if there is a God, and every man
by intuition knows that there is
—it is a very wicked thing to take
His name in vain.
