BankAmericard
Celebrates
First Birthday
BankAmericard of Georgia
celebrated a birthday June 1, and
Henry L. Asbury, Executive Vice
President of the Mclntosh State
Bank which offers the Bank-
Americard service in Jackson,
said the card has enjoyed a highly
successful first year of opera
tion. Sales in the initial twelve
month period have exceeded $48,-
766,000 statewide.
Mr. Asbury explained that
when BankAmericard of Georgia
was announced in March 1968 it
anticipated a goal of 300,000
cardholders, 3,500 merchant ac
counts and 20 correspondent
agent banks to establish the sys
tem in other Georgia cities within
a year.
These objectives were surpassed
in six months because of the im
mediate and widespread popu
larity of BankAmericard after
card usage began June 1968. To
day there are more than 800,000
BankAmericard holders in Geor
gia, over 14,000 merchant loca
tions throughout the state ac
cepting BankAmericard, and 140
correspondent agent banks par
ticipating in the BankAmericard
of Georgia program.
In 1968 national BankAmeri
card sales increased 77% over
the previous year, while the num
ber of cardholders jumped 179%
during the same period. Present
ly, the number of BankAmericard
holders is growing at the rate
of 900,000 a month, and there
are more than 18,000,000 card
holders throughout the country,
making BankAmericard the larg
est of all travel and entertain
ment credit cards combined.
Already BankAmericard is
found in Canada, Japan, Ireland,
Malta, Gibraltar, South Africa,
Mexico, England, the West In
dies, Hong Kong, Guam, Saipan,
Truk (in the Marianas) Scotland
and Italy.
The familiar blue, white and
gold BankAmericard emblem will
be appearing in all states (it is
now in 46) and in more countries
as its acceptance and use con
tinue to spread. “BankAmericard
of Georgia and Mclntosh State
Bank certainly expect to keep
pace with this growth as it goes
into its second year,” Mr. Asbury
concluded.

Jackson Coke
Bottle Found
At Conyers
An old Coca-Cola bottle, pro
perty of the Coca-Cola Bottling
Cos., Jackson, Ga., was found Fri
day in Conyers by Norman Ham
monds as he worked in his gar
den.
The bottle was unearthed in
excellent shape with only a chip
on the mouth to disturb its long
vigil. The local Coca-Cola plant
was closed in the late teens or
the early 20’s which would place
the age of the bottle from 49 to
55 years or so.
Mr. Hammonds gave the bottle
to his father-in-law, W. N. John
son, who brought the bottle by
the newspaper office Monday
morning. Mr. Johnson said he
plans to clean up the find and
keep it for awhile. An antique
dealer offered Mr. Hammonds
$6 for it, but many who have
viewed the almost perfect relic
of by gone days feel that it will
bring a great deal more than that.
The bottle was of 6% fluid
ounce size and was manufactured
long before the now familiar
Coke “waist” bottle came into
being.
