City Police
To Wage War
On Speeders
The City of Jackson Police De
partment, Watson Vaughn, Chief,
served fair notice to all speeders,
teenage and otherwise, that
speeding and reckless driving in
the city of Jackson will become
an expensive and painful process
for those offenders who are
caught.
Chief Vaughn said this week
that first offenders will be fined
$50.00, second offenders will
have to pay SIOO.OO and face
revocation of their drivers license
while third offenders will lose
their license, pay a stiff fine and
risk the distinct possibility of a
straight jail sentence.
Mayor C. B. Brown Jr. and
members of the city council are
backing the crackdown on speed
ers to the hilt and in fact are
instigators of the get tough policy
because of numerous complaints
about speeding over the city,
made by irate citizens to both
the council and members of the
police force.
Chief Vaughn said “We are
deadly serious about stopping
speeding and reckless driving on
city streets. The excessive speed
with which some drivers race up
and down residential streets is a
danger to the lives of both hu
man and pets with many reports
of dogs and cabs being killed by
speeding drivers. We want to put
a stop to this type of driving be
fore a terrible tragedy results
and we are determined to enforce
the crackdown on speeding with
every resource at our command.”

HAPPINESS: THE NEED OF MAIII
BY MYRNA WELLS **”
Since reaching the ripe old age
of thirty-one and having experi
enced what seems to me an ade
quate amount of both happiness
and unhappiness in those thirty
one years, I would like to share
with you some of the things that
make happiness for me.
But first just what is happi
ness? Certainly it is not the same
thing for all men. What may be
happiness for me perhaps would
not be for another.
It has been my experience that
if happiness is to be found a
person must learn two basic prin
ciples and put these principles
into practice every day, in every
situation he possibly can.
The first principle is not to
have your happiness totally de
pendent on any one person or one
thing. To do so is to ask for un
happiness. Leave yourself free
for many things and people to
bring you happiness. If we allow
ourselves to become dependent
on one source for happiness and
that source is taken from us we
have nothing left. So has the
fate of those who depended on
fame, fortune or one individual;
these are such frail and insecure
things and can be lost suddenly
and without warning.
The second principle is to train
yourself not to seek or need only
BIG things to make you happy.
Some people might call this fac
ing reality, others might call it
learning to be content where you
are. I prefer thinking of it as the
ability to be happy with little
things while waiting for the big
ger and better things to come.
These are some of the things
that have brought me happiness.
Happiness is a sunny day after
three days of rain.
A letter in my mailbox and no
bills.
The first ripe tomato from our
garden.
And when my bathroom scales
read I weigh five pounds less
than the doctor’s.
A card from a friend thanking
me for being her friend.
Happiness is watching a bird
build its nest or a sunset while
driving through El Paso.
Hearing children laugh or
music played.
My husband giving me a bottle
of perfume when the washing ma
chine needs repair.
Happiness is my son telling me
I am “the best mother he has
got.”
And my Marine friend arriving
home after his third tour of duty
in Viet Nam.
Happiness is a white orchid, a
glass of iced tea, a hot bath, a
book to read, a smile.
Happiness is the ability to love
others and the blessing of being
loved by others.
Happiness is breathing!
CARD OF THANKS
I wish to express my appre
ciation to all those friends who
remembered me in various ways
while a patient at Ponce de Leon
Infirmary, Fountain View Con
valescent Home, and since re
turning home. Every expression
of concern meant much to me
during my shut-in days. Thank
you for remembering me.-—Mrs.
Paul Evans.
