THE JACKSON PROGRESS-ARGUS, JACKSON, GEORGIA
Leather Carving
Is Hobby Of
Former Resident
Because a former Jackson girl,
Mrs. F. R. Wilson, of Lakeland,
Florida has leather carving as a
hobby she is the proud possessor
of a miniature replica of the
sword used for the investiture of
Prince Charles as Prince of
Wales. It is about 11 inches long
and is one of only 200 made
especially for the historical event.
Mrs. Wilson is the daughter of
Mrs. L. N. Trued of Sanford, Fla.
and is the niece of Mrs. Lois
Bailey of Jackson. Mrs. Wilson
was the former Miss Bobbie
Green and attended the first
grade here under Mis3 Annie Lou
McCord.
When Mrs. Wilson became in
terested in leather carving she
had no idea her new hobby
would bring her and her husband,
Frank, a gift predicted to become
a valuable collector’s item. The
treasured gift was sent to the
Wilsons by Len Dixon of Salford,
England, a suburb of Manchester.
Their English friend was also re
sponsible for their receipt of
three “first days of issue” covers
commemorating the day.
Mrs. Wilson explains that Mr.
Dixon is a correspondence friend
whom they have never met but
feel they know him well through
the exchange of letters. Their
correspondence friendship came
about because of their mutual in
terest in leather carving. Mr. Dix
on is \ice president of the British
Leather Carver’s Association.
Mrs. Wilson explained that she
began leather carving when she
stopped working and wanted
something interesting to do. One
of her finest creations is a mini
ature saddle made by Mrs. Wilson
for her enormous gray tiger cat
with the intriguing name of
“Lover-Kat.”
Mrs. Wilson said that they
have already received an offer
for the sword by a collector but
they are not interested, just
wanting to enjoy it as a gift.
