Ignorance Is
Expensive,
Rodimon States
Col. William H. Rodimon, pres
ident of Georgia Military College,
Milledgeville, in a brilliant and
thought-provoking address, told
members of the Jackson Kiwanis
Club Tuesday night that “ignor
ance is more expensive than edu
cation” and cited as shocking and
sobering that Georgia annually
has 30,000 dropouts from high
schools and colleges. M. L. Powell
was program chairman and pre
sented the distinguished educator.
Col. Rodimon pointed with
some dismay to the fact that
there are over 200,000 adults in
the state who have less than a
high school education and said
that GMC offered a sound, top
quality education. He stated that
over 95 percent of the students
went on to receive a basic de
gree and pointed out that GMC
is one of the top nine essential
military schools in the country.
Col. Rodimon said too many
people erroneously believe that a
military college is a type of
reformatory institution where
actually the prime consideration
is to mold good boys into better
men, making them into capable,
sensible men who in turn will
furnish capable and sensible
leadership in the world of to
morrow. A military school is first
and foremost an educational in
stitution with a military environ
ment. He proudly cited that one
third of all students who have
graduated from GMC are in po
sitions of leadership. He further
emphasized the importance of
self discipline and said that dis
cipline must be imposed without
and that discipline must be hon
ored. It was the speaker’s opinion
that the young want discipline
and when they find it is firm
and fair they will accept it.
Col. Rodimon pointed out that
military schools foster patriotism
and teach the fundamental princi
ples of truth, honor, and service.
The educator said “I see nothing
wrong in being patriotic, and
showing respect to the Flag, and
serving one’s country.” He feels
that yoUng men should aspire to
serve their country and praised
the ROTC program which fur
nishes 79 percent of officers in
the U. S. Army from civilian
based schools. Col. Rodimon said
that ROTC units over the coun
try annually furnish over 200,-
000 Second Lieutenants for army
service.
An interclub delegation from
Covington was present and in
cluded Mel Waggoner, Ike Hay,
J. E. Rainey, and Bill Dickey.
Other guests included M. C.
Paget, new principal at Jackson
High School, Dr. Steve Van de
Carr, Dentist at the Georgia
Diagnostic and Classification
Center, and Jere Moore of Mil
ledgeville, former Editor-Publish
er of the Milledgeville Union-
Recorder and former president of
the Georgia Press Association,
who accompanied Col. Rodimon to
Jackson. Ralph Carr Jr. was sa
luted on his birthday during the
week.
Macon Group
Entertain
At Center
Mayor Ronnie Thompson of
Macon brought the Earl Striplind

an outstanding program of pop
ular songs and music that was en
joyed by the more than 300 per
sons in attendance.
The Striplind Group appears
regularly on Radio Station
WDEN and Station WMAZ-TV
both of Macon. The group was
composed of six men and one lady
and gave an outstanding per
formance that was greatly appre
ciated by the large audience.
Warden Richard W. Ballard of
the Georgia Diagnostic and Clas
sification Center commended
Mayor Thompson for his thought
fulness in arranging for the fine

Luzier and Chaplain Ben Wright
of the Diagnostic Center staff
were also instrumental in arrang
ing for the appearance of the

Young Sam Morris just “loaned” us a
dime so he could make his weekly
collect call home from summer camp.
His total camp bill will cost his parents
well over two hundred dollars. The cost
of keeping in touch with mom and dad
by telephone: $4.10. As far as the
Morris’ are concerned, that’s a big
bargain.
