Many Butts County homemak
ers have been asking for tips on
proper food storage. So, I hope
this information will be helpful.
Food storage is important for
keeping high quality and prevent
ing unnecessary spoilage. Con
sider the guide in storing food in
your home.
Hold the following items at
room temperature until ripe;
then refrigerate uncovered: ap
ples, apricots, avocados, berries,
cherries, grapes, melons (except
watermelons), nectarines, peach
es, pears, plums and tomatoes.
Store these foods in a cool
room or refrigerate uncovered:
grapefruit, lemons, limes and
oranges.
Store the following in a cool
room away from bright light: ma
ture onions, potatoes, rutabagas,
winter squash and sweet potatoes.
Refrigerate the following cov
ered: asparagus, snap or wax
beans, beets, broccoli, cabbage,
carrots, cauliflower, celery,
husked corn, cucumbers, greens,
green onions, parsnips, shelled
peas, green peppers, radishes,
summer squash and turnips.
Refrigerate these items uncov
ered: lima beans in pods, corn in
husks, peas in pods, pineapples,
and watermelons.
Here are some tips on canned,
frozen and dried food storage.
Store canned foods in a dry
place at room temperature but
not above 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
Frozen foods can be stored in the
freezing unit of the refrigerator.
For long frozen food storage
periods use a food freezer and
keep the temperature at zero de
grees Fahrenheit.
Dried foods may be stored at
room temperature. Store dried
fruits in tightly closed containers.
In warm, humid weather, refrig
erate dried fruits. Store nonfat
dry milk in a closed container at
temperature of 75 degrees Fah
renheit or lower. Because of its
nonfat content, dry whole milk
does not keep as well as nonfat
dry milk. Keep dry whole milk
in tightly closed container in the
refrigerator. Refrigerate recon
stituted dry milk as you would
whole fresh fluid milk.
Refrigerate lard, butter, mar
garine, drippings and opened con
tainers of cooking and salad oils.
You can store most firm vege
table shortenings (those that
have been hydrogenated), cov
ered, at room temperature. Re
frigerate opened jars of salad
dressing. Do not freeze salad
dressing.
I hope these storage hints will
be helpful to many Butts County
folks because I know the disap
pointment of finding spoiled
food.
It’* a Fact!
Time may be money, but it is
much easier to persuade a man
to give you his time than to lend
you his money.

Same goes for Ayaviri, Cuyo Cuyo and Coota.
Every day of the year. Except when they flicker
and go off. Like if one person too many turns
on an iron and the whole town goes black.
But in Athens, Rome, Cairo and everywhere else
in Georgia you can count on electricity 99.9%
of the time. Even in summer when everyone is
running air conditioners, electric fans, and raiding
the refrigerator for ice cubes. Or on a cold
winter morning when thousands of coffee makers
are perking, hot showers are running, electric
blankets arc making it harder to get up and
electric heating is making it easier.
We apologize for that .1%. We’re trying to close
the gap and make a perfect record. Maybe
someday we will. But until then, you can depend
on the other 99.9. And that’s a promise!
