Three Courses
Are Available
To Adults Here
Announcement was made this
week by Bill Jones, Butts Coun
ty School Superintendent, that
plans are being made to offer a
30 hour instructional course for
adults who are interested in ob
taining a Georgia Equivalent
Diploma (GED).
The course is designed to pre
pare adults for the GED exam
which will be administered upon
completion of the instructional
period. Mr. Jones stated that
many places of employment now
recognize the GED diploma thus
it would profit any adult who
does not presently have a high
school diploma to enroll in this
course. Mr. Jones went on to say
that another program is presently
being worked on in the area of
Business Education. The course
would include instruction in ba
sic typewriting and bookkeeping
principles.
Another available instructional
program that is being offered to
adults in Butts County is a Basic
Adult Education program. This
course is designed for persons
who have mastered less than
eighth grade level in school.
All three of these courses can
be offered at no expense to the
participants other than supplies
purchased. These programs are
being offered through the joint
efforts of the Griffin-Spalding
County Area Vocational-Techni
cal School and the Butts County
Board of Education.
Mr. Jones stated that all of
these programs will be offered
to adults in Butts County pro
vided there is enough interest

Here are some tips on how to
properly store this delicious fruit.
Only perfect apples should be
stored for later use. Store slightly
underripe apples for two weeks
or less in a cool place—6o de
grees is a good temperature—
to ripen.
Apples that are ripe enough
for eating out of hand will keep
in your refrigerator for a week
or longer. Place them in the hu
midifier compartment or in a
moisture resistant container, such
as a polyethylene bag (cut a few
scattered half-inch holes in the
bag). Most varieties of apples
will keep several months if
stored at slightly lower temper
atures.
For longer storage, I suggest
the following: Prepare your fa
vorite apple pie recipe in quan
displayed. Interested persons
should contact the office of the
Principal of either Jackson High
School or Henderson High School
during school hours and advise
the secretary in which course
they are interested.

tity omitting the spices and but
ter. Line the pie pans with foil,
pour the amount of filling for
one pie, freeze, then lift filling
out of pie pan, wrap air tight,
label and quick freeze. These will
be ready at any time for a home
made apple pie. You may also
freeze the filling in rigid contain
ers.
Another storage idea is to make
applesauce. Heat the apples till
tender and run through a food
mill or seive. Sweaten the sauce
to taste. This may be canned or
frozen. You may also use this as
pureed apples for the small tots.
Of course, you can make ap
ple jellies, apple juice, apple
rings, apple butter or apple
chutney. Baked apples may also
be prepared in quantity. Bake the
apples until about three-fourths
done, cool quickly and package in
family size rigid freezer contain
ers and quick freeze.
