Shoot Out
Leaves Man
In Hospital
\:i argument that began Satur
day night between two Negro
erupted into a full fledged
shoot out about 6:15 Tuesday
morning at Lane’s crossing on
aria Highway 42 north, with
the brisk exchange of gunfire
leaving one man hospitalized in
County Hospital, Monti
ce jlo, and two others slightly
wounded by the free flying pel
lets.
According to Billy Leverette,
Butts County Deputy Sheriff, the
explosive situation was triggered
from ill feelings resulting from
an argument Saturday night be
tween Eddie Lee Childs of Route
2, Jackson, and Robert Tanner,
also of Route 2.
Deputy Leverette said that a
car occupied by Tanner, Bobby
Head, David Lee Watkins, and
John Robert Shannon pulled up
to park at the intersection of
Highway 42 and the Old Bethel
Road to enable the occupants, em
ployees of the DeKalb County
Sanitation Department, to catch
the bus that daily transports the
employees from Jackson to Deca
tur. Already on the scene, ac
cording to Deputy Leverette, was
Eddie Lee Childs’ car with its oc
cupants, Freddie Childs and Wil
lie Tyson.
Evidence indicates, Mr. Lever
ette stated, that as soon as the
Tanner car stopped the shooting
began with Childs wounded in
the left shoulder with a 410 shot
gun blast allegedly fired by Tan
ner. Childs is in Jasper Memorial
Hospital recovering from his
wounds. A spectator, John Wilks,
was struck by a shotgun pellet in
the chest that barely broke the
skin, according to Deputy Lever
ette. Tanner’s left hip was grazed
by a charge from a weapon be
lieved to have been a shotgun, not
yet located, according to Deputy
Leverette.
Eddie Lee Childs, Freddie
Childs, and Willie Tyson have
been charged with aggravated
assault, according to Deputy Lev
erette. The deputy sheriff said
that there is evidence to indicate
that Tanner, who usually boarded
the bus in Jackson, had driven to
the Lane Crossing stop to ride to
Decatur in an effort to avoid
trouble.

OhhEhHi
TOMMY FLETCHER
Tommy Fletcher, Junior Guard and
linebacker, is the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Julian Fletcher.
Tommy started at left guard last
year and did such an outstanding job
blocking that he was chosen as the
outstanding blocker. Even though he
was good last year, experience has
made him a better blocker this year.
Last spring when the coaching staff
began looking for a line blocker, Tom
my was a unanimous choice. He is a
hard tackier. Tommy is a small tackle
at 155 pounds but with the fortitude,
ability and desire make him a well re
spected ball player.
Tommy is the kind of player that
coaches dream of having. He is never
a loafer jhe gives more than 100 r 1
at all times.
A team full of Tommy Fletchers
would be greatly feared.

BRUCE HICKS
Bruce Hicks, Junior Tailback and
safety .man on defense, is the son of
Mrs. Wright G. Hicks and the late Dr.
Hicks.
Bruce, being a starter since the
ninth grade, is a well experienced ball
player. His quickness enables him to be
a well respected running back. His
speed has added the extra punch the
Jackson offense has needed to gain
large chunks of yardage. The fans who
wanted to see Bruce break away last
year have been thrilled to see him
break for several touchdowns this year.
He is equally a threat on defense. At
safetyman, he is the last hope to stop
the long bomb. There have been few
times that the long bomb has been
threatened to score.
In the class room Bruce is an out
standing student and well represents
the eharapter on the Jackson High
Football team.

Leonard's Losers

Sponsored By ABW CHEVROLET CO.
The second week of college football produced an UN
USUAL number of stunning UPSETS and I must admit that
I did not PREDICT all of them but still had the old SMART
PILL machine above the 80% accuracy mark . . . College
SOPHOMORES have been the remarkable INGREDIENT of
SURPRISE that has made this a most difficult season to pre
dict so far, but I’m sure that they will learn how to TIE their
own SHOES and get their SHOULDER PADS on pretty
quick and then things will settle down to a complete STATE
of CONFUSION . . . One thing for sure, I’ve got to change
the SMART PILL FORMULA a little this week by adding a
little CALIFORNIA BLUE GRASS and OKLAHOMA STATE
VIGARO . . . This should give more BODY to the PILL
without EFFECTING the TASTE too much . . .
MICHIGAN vs MISSOURI
BO SCHEMBECHLER’S WOLVERINES have been most
impressive so far this year and will find out just how good
they are when DAN DEVINE brings his COLUMBIA TIGERS
into the ARBOR for a CAT NAP . . . JOE MOORE is one
TIGER that won’t have his PAW STUCK in his EAR and
the MICHIGANDER’S will have to use all their CUNNING
to STEAL this game from the SHOW-ME CATS . . . DON
MOORHEAD could b e the TOWER of STRENGTH to play
DING DONG BELL and throw the PUSSY in the WELL . . .

The ALTER BOYS got LOADED on SACRAMENTAL
BOILERMAKERS at the PURDUE CHAPEL last week and
could be in big trouble if they don’t SHAKE their HANG
OVER off in time to prepare for the SPARTAN attack on
Saturday . . . The LANCERS have SINED against WASH
INGTON and STOLEN from S. M. U. so they should have a
long STAY in the CONFESSIONAL before the PADRES send
them out to SIT in their own PEW . . .

NING will DIRECT their TROOPS as the battle gets hot and
will try to OUT FLANK each other so they can do some
DAMAGE with the LONG BOMBS . . . It’ll be close for a while
but the BEAR has a SECRET WEAPON and when JOHNNY

last week in KNOXVILLE but I’ll guarantee you that SHUG

his KITTENS and when the WILDCATS arrive on the scene
thy’ll find anew FELINE to contend with . . . CATS SEE
