Butts Soldiers
Are Reunited
In Vietnam
A most unusual event occurred
to SP/5 Bernard M. Maddox in
Vietnam on Tuesday, September
22nd. SP/5 Maddox was lying on
his bunk that morning daydream
ing, probably about his family,
friends, and hometown of Jack
son, when he heard footsteps en
ter the barracks. When he looked
up to see who it was he had to
take a second look because much
to his disbelief the soldier that
entered was SP/4 R. Tommy
Cleveland, also of Jackson.
What makes this event so un
usual? These two soldiers are
not only from the same home
town, but have also been next
door neighbors since the age of
two, they started to school to
gether and graduated together.
They had not seen one another
in 16 months and never dreamed
they would meet in a place like
Vietnam.
After having a happy reunion,
which included lunch, SP/4 Cleve
land went on his way to Chu Chi,
Vietnam to get his finance rec
ords. After completing his busi
ness trip he returned by way of
Phu Lois, where SP/5 Maddox is
stationed, to have supper and
spend the night with him.- The
next morning, after breakfast,
the two parted company once
again with SP/4 Cleveland re
turning to Saigon and SP/5 Mad
dox continuing his duties at Phu
Lois.
SP/5 Maddox, the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Bernard Maddox of
Jackson, is with the 34th Engr.
Bn. (Const.) Division and is ex
pected home in February.
SP/4 R. Tommy Cleveland is
the son of Mrs. Bertha Cleveland
of Jackson and was with the 24th
Inf. Div. until injured and is now
with the 87th Inf. Div. SP/4
Cleveland is expected home in
November.
CARD OF THANKS
I wish to express my sincere
appreciation to all those friends
and relatives who remembered me
in so many ways while I was a
patient at Jasper Memorial Hos
pital and since returning home.
I am especially grateful to Dr.
Barrow, Miss Ethel Smith, and
the nurses at the hospital for
their efficient services. Every
kindness was appreciated more
than words can express.—Mrs.
Thomas Cooper.
