Grid Contest
Prognosticators of all ages,
shapes and sizes can take their
hats off to Charles Dreyer and
Mary Zane Swearingen for their
excellence in selecting football
winners in an upset studded
weekend that saw “form” thrown
out the window. Dreyer and Mrs.
Swearingen missed only one
game each but when the points
were tabulated Charles Dreyer
emerged first place winner with
the .SIO.OO prize with 146 points
to Mrs. Swearingen’s 220 points,
good for second prize of $5.00 in
cash.
The winner missed the Indiana-
California game, while Mrs.
Swearingen picked incorrectly on
Notre Dame-Purdue.
The contest this year, gaining
in interest as the football season
progresses, is sponsored by Al
len’s Hom-Ond Food Store, Jack
son Hardware, Wise Standard
Station, and City Pharmacy.
Games causing prophets the
most trouble were Auburn-Ten
nessee, Indiana-California, Notre
Dame-Purdue, and Wyoming-Air
Force. Surprisingly, most seers
predicted Tech’s win over Baylor
and only one or two guessers ven
tured to select Clemson over
Georgia. In fact, R. P. Newton
was the sole contestant to pick
the Tech-Baylor score on the
nose.

Sponsors remind those who
wish to enter the contest that
entry blanks may be obtained at
their places of business and that
the blanks must be desposited at
one of the four sponsors on or
before noon Saturday the games
are to be played. The ballots are
picked up as soon after 12 o’-
clock Saturday as possible for the
judges to determine the winner
over the weekend. Winners are
posted in windows of the sponsor
ing firms and announced in the
next issue of the Progress-Argus.
TOMMY GLIDEWELL PLEDGES
AUBURN’S DELTA TAU DELTA
AUBURN—A total of 435 Au
burn University men pledged
membership in the 25 fraterni
ties at the end of fall rush, a
slight increase over the number
of pledged last fall, according to
F. Garth Jenkins, assistant to
the Dean of Student Affairs.
Jenkins said 557 men partici
pated in the annual rush this year
and that a number of them may
pledge at a later date.
New pledges and the areas in
clude Thomas Michael Glidewell,
Jackson, Delta Tau Delta.

Larry Gridley
Is Director of
Mclntosh APDC
Larry E. Gridley, formerly of
the Georgia State Planning Bu
reau, Atlanta, has been appointed
as Executive Director of the Mc-
Intosh Trail Area Planning and
Development Commission with
offices in Griffin. The Mclntosh
Trail APDC serves the counties
of Butts, Fayette, Henry, Lamar,
and Spalding.
Mr. Gridley said that he was
“very impressed with the attitude
and capability of the commission’s
Board of Directors and felt the
directors were very represent
ative of the counties and cities
they serve.”
Mr. Gridley is a graduate of
the University of Kansas where
he holds both a Bachelors and
Masters Degree. He has also had
one year of post graduate studies
in urban planning at UCLA and
had a Local Planning Administra
tion certificate from the Interna
tional City Managers Association
of Chicago.
Mr. Gridley comes to the Mc-
Intosh Area with a distinguished
record. From 1958-1963 he was a
teacher, school principal, and
a School Superintendent. From
1963-1964 he was a private con
sultant for the United States Air
Force and was a Site Planner
for missile bases. In 1964 he was
a City Planner for Kansas City,
Missouri. By 1966 he was ap
pointed as Senior Staff Planner
for the Kansas City Metropolitan
Planning Commission. In August
of 1967 Mi-. Gridley was appoint
ed as Coordinator of Regional
Planning for the State of Mis
souri. In December he became
the Director of State Planning
Office for the State of Missouri.
As Missouri’s chief planning of
ficer, Mr. Gridley was responsible
for the creation and establish
ment of 18 regional planning
commissions (like Georgia’s
APDC’s).
Also, Larry Gridley was re
sponsible for the United States
Department of Urban Develop
ment’s first five year compre
hensive planning program which
was through Section 701 of the
Housing and Urban Development

mary of Friday, October 10, 1969, subject to
the rules of the City Democratic Executive Com
mittee.
I have lived in Jackson for nineteen years and
served as First Ward Councilman for four
years. During these years much has been ac
complished to improve our city.
I have represented the best interest of all the
citizens of Jackson.
If elected to this office for another term, I
pledge my best efforts for GOOD, EFFICIENT
GOVERNMENT.

Band Boosters
Plan Spaghetti
Supper Oct. 17
The Band Boosters will spon
sor a spaghetti supper in Jackson
School lunchroom Friday, October
17, prior to the game between
Gordon Military and the Jackson
Red Devils. Spaghetti, cole slaw,
rolls, tea and coffee will be
served from 5 to 8. Home baked
cakes and pies will also be avail
able. Tickets are available from
any member of the band or band
booster for 75c and $1.25.
Officers elected for the 1969-
70 school year are President,
Mrs. John Morgan; Vice-Presi
dent, Mrs. Jimmy O’Neal and Sec
retary and Treasurer, Mr. J. D.
Zachary Jr.
Miss Nancy Long, Band Direc
tor, and Mr. W. B. Jones, Su
perintendent, met with the group
Monday night to discuss the needs
of the band and how these needs
can best be financed. It is hoped
that profits from the spaghetti
supper will help to finance some
of the most critical and immedi
ate needs of the band.

Trail Area Planning and Develop
ment Commission, Mr. Gridley
has visited with each community
in the five county area. He com
mented that “this region prob
ably has the greatest potential in
Georgia for establishing the high
est standard of living for all its
citizens, and has the greatest
opportunity in which to build the
kind of communities in which
people want to live.” Mr. Gridley
added, “I have been very im
pressed with local leadership in
their interest and competency,
and have found my working rela
tionships very rewarding.”
