Barbara Bankston
fakes Ist Prize
In Grid Contest
The underdogs rose up Sat
urday in righteous indignation
and mighty play to smite their
more favored opponents from pil
lar to post and great was the fall
thereof of prognosticators who
did not sense this startling change
~f events. Consequently, three
contestants who displayed uner
ring knowledge and luck, foresaw
some of the upsets that trans
pired with the three missing only
one game each. They were Bar
bara Bankston, 152 Benton
Street, Jackson, winner of first
prize of SIO.OO cash with 195
points; second place was awarded
to Lou Kimbro of 1605 Briar
wood Road, N. E., Apt. B, At
lanta, with 207 points, good for
$5.00 in cash. Also missing only
one game was Walt McKemie who
finished out of the money with
225 points.
The football contest, past the
half way mark now, is sponsored
this year by Jackson Hardware,

Pharmacy, and Allen’s Hom-Ond
Food Store.

cellent prognosticating under the
circumstances, were Jerry Hobbs,

Jr., Margaret Sherrell, Frank
Morris, Hugh Bush, Lee Roy O’-

Games giving selectors the
most trouble were Georgia-Ten
nessee, with a large number fa
voring the Bulldogs between the
hedges; Indiana-Michigan State,
and LSU-Mississippi, with most
prophets going with the Tigers.
The largest number of new
contestants during the season en
tered the contest last week with
the sponsors reminding those who
wish to try their hand at pig
skin prognosticating can do so by
obtaining blanks at their places
of business and depositing them
in boxes at any of the four spon
sors by noon on Saturday that
the games are to be played.

Of course, they aren’t the fresh
ones we enjoyed during the sum

Versatile, succulent canned
peaches are a year-round ■ treat.
And right now they are in plenti
ful supply.
This year’s peach crop was es
timated at 78.8 million bushels
*
—the largest crop in ten years,
according to the USDA Consumer
and Marketing Service.
And with the large stock of
canned peaches from last year’s
crop, total supplies of canned
peaches will be far larger than
for previous years.
So stock up on peaches now,
and enjoy them throughout the
chilly months ahead.
Try hot canned peaches for a
colorful and delicious garnish to
poultry dishes. Or for dessert
time goodness, fold canned chunk
style canned peaches into whip
ped cream or gelatin. That’s
good eating.

the electricity will be off. If the
freezer will be on in a few hours,
your frozen food is safe.
Food in a full freezer at zero
degrees won’t thaw for two days.
In a half filled freezer, food
should keep well for a day. The
larger the freezer and the better
the insulation, the longer food
will stay frozen.
Before any emergency, locate
the nearest place to get dry ice
for your freezer in case power is
off for more than a day or two.
Saw a 50-pound chunk of dry ice
into smaller pieces and set them
on pieces of cardboard on top of
frozen food packages. Wear
gloves while handling ice.
You could also arrange with a
local freezer plant to transfer
frozen food there in an emerg
ency.
Plan ahead—be prepared—
but hope no emergency arises.
THE JACKSON PROGRESS-ARGUS, JACKSON, GEORGIA
Another FANTASTIC week of prognosticating has gone
into my record book at 92%, which brings my SEASON’S
average up to almost UNBELIEVABLE 89% ... The OLD
SMART PILL MACHINE really had a field day in the UPSET
department last week, as it correctly forecast the downfall
of FLORIDA and L. S. U., along with several other close
contests ... I must admit that the TENNESSEE VICTORY
was not predicted, but there was no way of knowing that
some of the PARTS would be MISSING from GEORGIA’S
TINKER TOY OFFENSE, and several others would be RUST
ED by the MOIST CLIMATE on Saturday, at any rate that
was one of the misques recorded and the BULLDOG CARD
will be re-programed before it goes back into the computer . . .
MISSOURI vs OKLAHOMA
DAN DEVINE’S COLUMBIA CATS de-railed the Man
hattan WILDCATS, and now will go for the big eight
COOKIES when CHUCK FAIRBANKS drives his SOONER
SCHOONER in for REPAIRS ... The feline MECHANICS
will over-haul his TRANSMISSION, TUNE UP his ENGINE,
CHECK his BRAKES, and CHANGE his OIL before the
final WASH JOB is completed, and this is pretty good con
sidering the COVERED WAGON they’ll be working on . . .
The SOONER EXPRESS will ROLL OUT of the SHOP PUR
RING like a SEWING MACHINE, but when it starts down
the GRIDIRON FREEWAY, it’ll have a total BREAKDOWN,
and return to NORMAN with STRIPPED GEARS and BURNT
POINTS . . .
LEONARD’S LOSER OKLAHOMA
NO LOSERS IN A CHEVROLET
OHIO STATE vs WISCONSIN
WOODY HAYES plays the old BADGER GAME this
week, when the CHEESE MERCHANTS come into town for
a convention . . . JOHN COATTA will find himself in a very
COMPROMISING situation when he allows his young men
to be SURROUNDED by a bunch of OHIO LOVELIES dis
guised as BUCKEYES, and will have to pay the PRICE to
get back to MADISON without a SCANDAL . . . The BIG
TEN CHAMPS really shouldn’t do this to the RODENTS, but
what can you expect from a BUNCH of NUTS . . .
LEONARD’S LOSER WISCONSIN
YOU ALWAYS WIN WITH A CHEVROLET!
L. S. U. vs ALABAMA
The BENGALS got their TAILS hung in a MISSISSIPPI
MANNING TRAP and lost their undefeated label in Jackson,
but the LOSS of a LITTLE PIECE of their REAR EXTREM
ITY won’t SLOW these CATS down very much . . . PAUL’S
PACHYDERMS had a lot of trouble in the same area trying
to STOMP a WEAK DOG and just did get away with their
IVORY intact, so it would appear that they will be in
TROUBLE when the RED STICK PRESSURE COOKER is
FjRED. up on Saturday night . . . The TIGER DEN ain’t no
place to be after DARK, and the CRIMSON will long RE
MEMBER how the TIDE went OUT . . .
LEONARD’S LOSER ALABAMA
NO LOSERS IN A CHEVROLET
MISSISSIPPI STATE vs AUBURN
CHARLIE SHIRA’S POOPLES just keep on coming back
for more each week, and have really hit the JACK POT this
week when they lay it on the line with SHUG JORDAN’S
AUBURN CATS . . . They say you can’t TEACH an OLD
DOG NEW TRICKS, but I’ll guarantee you one thing, they
are sure going to get a REFRESHER COURSE on some of
the OLD ONES they have FORGOTTEN about . . . The felines
remember some of the BAD TIMES they went through, and
the SUNDAY RE-CAP of this contest will read like the old
paper back NOVEL—The CAT’S REVENGE by CLAUDE
something or other . . .
LEONARD’S LOSER MISSISSIPPI STATE
YOU ALWAYS WIN WITH A CHEVROLET!
FLORIDA vs GEORGIA
The GIANT WATER LIZZARDS lost their STATUS in
an ALABAMA CAT HOUSE, and now will be concentrating
on a group pf UNFRIENDLY K-9’s that gave them a WATER
TREATMENT in their own bov.-l last year . . . DOOLEY’S
DOGS got the TENNESSEE DICKY treatment in their own
compound, and will really be on fire when they hit the
Florida border, but they’ll have to do more than BARK at
the MOON if they expect to qualify for GATOR ADE . . .
The RED CLAY HOUNDS have LOST a few TEETH in re
cent weeks, and their BITE has LOST some of its EFFEC
TIVENESS, and tough GATOR HIDE should prove too much
for the DISTEMPER DANDIES . . .
LEONARD’S LOSER GEORGIA

V. P. I. vs FLORIDA STATE
JERRY CLAIBORNE’S TURKEYS get tuned up for
the THANKSGIVING TANGO when BILL PETERSON brings
his HATCHET-MEN in for a dry run at the GOBBLERS . . .
The BIG BIRDS will give the INDIANS a RUN for their
WAMPAM before they put their HEADS on the CHOPPING
BLOCK for the final EXECUTION, but the REDMEN should
be CAREFUL, because they use RUBBER BLOCKS in
BLACKSBURG and the RECOIL might put a PART in their
BONNET . . .

TULANE vs GEORGIA TECH
CARSON’S RAIDERS had a DEVIL of a time with DUKE
and should turn GREEN when the WAVE starts to ROLL in
NEW ORLEANS . . . JIM PITTMAN’S CHARTREUSE

rest of the seasoo ... The HUMBLE BUMBLES might get

out of the CRESCENT CUBICAL with their WINGS intact,
but it will be CLOSER than the LENGTH of a SHORT
STINGER ... The SMART PILL machine says the HIVE
will JIVE, but I can’t see the INSECTS getting out ALIVE . . .
LEONARD’S LOSER GEORGIA TECH
NO LOSERS IN A CHEVROLET
TENNESSEE vs S. CAROLINA
The RIFLEMEN kept their POWDER DRY and BLEW
the BULLDOGS out of sight, so I can see no reason to expect
PAUL’S POULTRY to have any better treatment at the
KNOXVILLE SLAUGHTER-HOUSE this Saturday . . . The
CHICKS have been CHEWED up by DOGS and SCALPED by
INDIANS and should get their INTESTINES REMOVED
when the mountain people get their BOWIE KNIVES and go
to work on them . . . HEMOGLOBIN and FEATHERS make
a NASTY MESS and DOUG DICKEY will have a hard time
getting the TARTON TURF CLEANED up in time for VAN
DY on the 29th ...
LEONARD’S LOSER S. CAROLINA
YOU ALWAYS WIN WITH A CHEVROLET!
RICE vs ARKANSAS
“BO” HAGAN’S BLUE BIRDS have not been too suc
cessful this year in LIGHTING up the SCORE BOARD, and
may have a TOTAL COLLAPSE this week when PORKEY
PIG brings his GILLETTE HOGS TO the HOUSTON trough
for a TEXAS SLOPPING . . . OWLS are SMART and should
have enough sense to STAY CLEAR of the PORKERS while
they are in town, but you know how INQUISITIVE a BIG
EYED BIRD can get when there’s some ACTIVITY in the
NEST, and that will be the DOWNFALL of the LIMB HANG
ERS . . . It’ll be a RICE-A-RONI and BYE BYE BIRDIE for
the FEATHER MERCHANTS . . .
LEONARD’S LOSER RICE
NO LOSERS IN A CHEVROLET
TEXAS vs BAYLOR
The LONG HORNS get down to BEAR facts when the
WACO BRUINS come into the CORRAL to look for some
TEXAS HONEY . . . DARRELL ROYAL’S BULLS don’t
COLLECT any of the SWEET STUFF, so the GRIZZLIES
will be OUT OF LUCK in their quest for winter STAPLES,
but that won’t be the WORST thing that will happen to them
cause when they leave they won’t have any FUR COATS or
ANYTHING to HANG them on as the BIG HORN BLOWS
the HAIR off the BEAR . . .
LEONARD’S LOSER BAYLOR
YOU ALWAYS WIN WITH A CHEVROLET!
SOUTHERN CAL vs WASHINGTON STATE
The TROJANS STRETCHED out and snapped back for
another close victory as they HUNG one of the CALIFORNIA
GOLDEN BEARS and now are resting up for JIM SWEEN
EY’S COUGARS to arrive at the Coliseum to play SKIN
THE CAT with the PONIES.. . . JOHN McKAY should have
no trouble keeping the TRAP SHUT on his WOODEN HORSE
and won’t have any TROUBLE with TERMITES until he
plays his cross town rival for the ROSE BOWL bid . . . The
Washington CATS won’t do anything to DE-Fur this show
down . . .
LEONARD’S LOSER WASHINGTON STATE
NO LOSERS IN A CHEVROLET
MIAMI vs NAVY
The ANNAPOLIS CLIPPER sails into BISCAYNE BAY
for shore leave for the cadet MARINERS and run head
long into a POWERFUL HURRICANE while they are at
ANCHOR . . . The MATZA WARRIORS seem to IMPROVE
with AGE and should give the future ADMIRALS a LESSON
in NAVIGATION on the SEA of END ZONES, as they
STRIP the DECKS for ACTION and LAY SALVOS on the
good ship NANNY (JOAT . . . When the SHOOTING’S over
the TEMPLE BELLS will PEAL out ANCHORS AWAY as the
MIDSHIPMEN SWIM out to sea in this SKIVIES . . .
