Kiwanians
Witness
Seance
Mr. Howard Higgins, 0 f R 0
Chester, New York, bona f ide
spiritualist and former Dean of
Emerson College in Boston, Mass
entertained the Jackson Kiwanis
Club Tuesday night with a talk
on “Spiritualism” and created the
first seance which Kiwanis mem
bers had ever seen.
The program was arranged and
the speaker presented by David
Black, program chairman.
Mr. Higgins told of experi
ments in extra sensory perception
(ESP) at Duke University and
told of several instances where
mental telepathy was the appar
ent link between persons separa
ted by great distances.
Mr. Higgins placed himself in
a trance and allowed a deceased
friend to speak to the club
through his body and mental pro
cess. He also demonstrated his
keen sense of perception by blind
folding himself and identifying
objects within a few inches of
his finger tips and did not err
on a single item. In another
demonstration Mr. Higgins caused
writing to appear on the inside
of two slates held above his head
with humorous messages for sev
eral Kiwanians.
Mr. Higgins then gav e an ex
pose type talk about spiritualism
in general and told how the racket
originated in the middle 1800’s
when two young girls attempted
to play a prank on a cousin who
was spending the night with
them. These young girls with
the aid of an older sister per
fected their trickery so well they
went on stage and made large
sums of money with the spiritual
ist shows and seances.
Four Kiwanians, Joe Hopper,
Loy Hutcheson, Kenneth Welch
and J. H. Bryant, had birthdays
during the past several days but
since only Mr. Welch was present
he was saluated musically on his
natal date.
Other guests were Col. Lee
Roy Ades, Mr. and Mrs. A. D.
Shoemaker, Mrs. Howard Higgins,
and Mrs. David Black.
An interclub delegation from
Griffin was also present.
