Merrily, Bells
Are Ringing
For Holiday
Ringing: across the ages and
around the world, bells are part
of the traditions of Christmas.
Zurich, Switzerland, has long
been noted for its beautiful bells,
say the editors of the New Book
of Knowledge.
Every Christmas Eve, the
Zurich bells ring out loud and
clear, calling families to church.
This same tradition is repeated
in thousands of other cities,
where chimes and bells ring out
at midnight from the steeples and
spires of churches.
Bells contribute to the sights
as well as the sounds of the holi
day season. They are a popular
decoration and are used as orn
ament on trees.
Tradition has it that bells in
spired Clement C. Moore to write
his famous poem, “A Visit from
St. Nicholas.” The inspiration
came from listening to the merry
jingle of bells on his horses’
harness, as he drove along on a
frosty winter night.

Three wise and good men followed a star one night in WSt
| . % v j. search of truth, in search of peace. Their quest led them
•'•• •->•?$; to a town called Bethlehem where lay an infant Babe. "
V. Then and there, new hope for mankind was born.
Two centuries later, we are still on a desperate quest
jjS3Bte.S&l for peace. But as yet our path is not as easy as those who 3
followed the light of a star, nor is it likely that we will jg||
find our answer in historic Bethlehem. But the message
of that place is still as clear, still as strong, if only we
will heed the words.
Seek Him, and you shall find Him . . . in quiet con
' / temptation, in prayer, in church He waits to welcome you.
Go to church this Sunday. Pray not only for your own
needs, but for all the world! Pray for peace! Goodwill
to all men!
