Thieves Pilfer
Pocketbook Of
Mr. Cleveland
A wallet belonging to James
Cleveland, widely known Butts
County resident and Jenkinsburg
merchant, was taken from a shelf
under the checkout counter of
his grocery store about one o’-
clock Wednesday afternoon, De
cember 17th, by two Negro men
and a Negro woman with $288.07
being removed from the wallet
with a one dollar bill left, wheth
er by accident or design, it is not
known.
Mr. Cleveland said that he and
Mrs. Joyce Harris, a clerk, were
in the store alone when the three
arrived. The woman, while pre
tending to look at some pet food
in the rear of the store, called Mr.
Cleveland to that location while
one of the men engaged Mrs.
Harris in conversation at the can
dy counter. While this occurred,
the remaining man removed the
wallet from under the checkout
counter taking the above stipu
lated sum from the wallet.
It was a few minutes later
when Mr. Cleveland discovered
the theft and reported it to the
Butts County Sheriff’s Depart
ment. Mr. Cleveland said that it
is his firm conviction that had he
been in the store alone he is cer
tain the threesome would have
killed him and rifled the cash
register. He credits the presence
of Mrs. Harris as a deterrent
from such a forcible act.
Mr. Cleveland also recalled
that since he had moved to Jenk
insburg seven years ago his store
has been robbed three times and
has been held up once.
It is believed that the party
who robbed Mr. Cleveland was
headed in a southward direction
and it is also believed that they
stopped at at least one other
local store. Because no descrip
tion of the car was obtainable
there are few clues in the case.
