First Baptist
Launches Drive
On Stewardship
“Give ... in the Spirit of
Christ!” will become a familiar
phrase to members of the First
Baptist Church of Jackson during
the next four weeks. This is the
theme of the church’s 1970 em
phasis on Christian Stewardship
that was launched officially last
Sunday, December 28.
The purpose of this emphasis
is to challenge every member of
First Baptist to greater levels of
commitment in giving of their
tithes and offerings.
“An emphasis like this is need
ed to turn our attention to the
joy and responsibility of Chris
tian giving,” said Rev. Donald L.
Folsom, pastor. “When we look
at the needs of our community,
the spiritual poverty of the world,
and the ‘giving’ example of
Christ, we are compelled to re
examine our level of commitment
to the important grace of Chris
tian stewardship.”
After the official launching,
there have been several special
emphasis Sundays set aside. Tith
ers Demonstration Day will be
January 11, when all members of
the church are encouraged to give
10% of their weekly income to
demonstrate how much more the
church could do for the Christian
cause if everyone tithed. On Jan
uary 14 a Loyalty Dinner is
planned to be held at the School
Cafeteria. On January 25 the
church will observe Victory Sun
day with the budget hopefully
subscribed and all pledge cards
returned to the church office.
The results will be announced on
this Sunday.
The 1970 budget for the First
Baptist Church is: $84,306.00,
and has been adopted by the
church in conference.

Harold Clarke
Speaker At
Kiwanis Club
The Hon. Harold G. Clarke, of
Forsyth, representative of Butts
and Monroe Counties in the Gen
eral Assembly, was speaker at the
Tuesday night meeting of the
Jackson Kiwanis Club and told of
bills that will probably be intro
duced in the 1970 session of the
legislature. Mr. Clarke, a Forsyth
attorney, was introduced by Rich
ard W. Watkins, Jr.
Mr. Clarke admonished that in
the studies of civilizations of the
world it has been learned by stu
dents of history that each en
dures for approximately 200
years, running from freedom to
bondage. He cited the apathetic
attitude of our nation today as
one of the final steps before the
demise of a civilization but said
that the cycle can he broken.
He said that if the second air
port is located in Henry County
the center of the metropolitian
Atlanta area population would
shift from a point near Brook
wood Station to a site in Clayton
County which would incorporate
Jackson and Butts County into
the Atlanta orbit. Mr. Clarke
pointed out that this area of
Georgia is undergoing a transi
tion period from rural to urban,
a transition that creates many
problems. He cited that organized
crime in Atlanta is obtaining a
toehold in three fields, pornog
raphy, gambling, and drugs.
Representative Clarke also point
ed out that anew constitution is
being prepared and called atten
tion to the fact that Georgia used
the same constitution from 1877
to 1945. It was his thinking that
probably the constitution should
be left as it is.
Malcolm Brenner of Atlanta
was a guest. A happy birthday
was sung to Lewis Freeman.
Hugh Glidewell was wished a hap
py birthday at the meeting last
week. Secretary Sandy Sanvidge
reminds Kiwanians that reports
are due next week.
