McLaren Tells
Lions Airport
Coming South
Dale McLaren, executive direc
tor of the Mclntosh Trail Area
Planning and Development Com
mission, spoke to the Butts
County Lions Club Tuesday and
told members and guests that the
Henry County site for the second
Atlanta airport is definitely still
in the running.
Mr. McLaren said that Atlanta
politicians and airline officials
attempted a power play early in
January when announcement was
made that North Fulton County
was the site preferred by the
airlines and that the airport
would be located at Site A, near
Alpharetta. However, opposition
mounted so fast and furious to
the announcement that momem
tum for the northern site has
been slowed considerably with
Henry County definitely being
considered again, according to
Mr. McLaren.
The speaker gave as his opinion
that if the North Fulton site is
eventually selected, it will mean
a phasing out of the present At
lanta airport despite statements
to the contrary by airline offi
cials. Mr. McLaren said the lo
cation of the airport in Henry
County would bring this area the
‘‘most refined industries in the
world.” He mentioned possibility
of anew automotive plant being
located in this area which would
furnish 19,000 new jobs.
Mr. McLaren pins hopes on the
eventual selection for Henry Cos.
on the Air Transportation Center
which would be constructed be
tween the existing airport and
the new facility but conceded
that the concept of the center is
so new and radical that the air
lines have not yet warmed to the
idea.
President Carl Brack said that
despite inclement weather the
Lions gave away 1,400 dogwoods,
2,000 pines, and over 200 cataw
ba trees in the “Beautify Geor
gia Day.”
Guests were Tom McNamara
and Doyle Jones Jr.
