FIERY TRIALS
Instead of being bowed down
and discouraged nearly to the
point of losing our salvation when
“fiery trials” come upon us, Peter
tells us to “think it not strange
. . . (when they try you): but
rejoice, inasmuch as ye are par
takers of Christ’s sufferings”
(I Pet. 4:12). It would be well
if we kept in mind that “this
world is not a friend of grace,”
and when it comes with re
proaches against us, to make it
an occasion “for the spirit of glo
ry and of God” to rest upon us.
We are not to be ashamed to
“suffer as a Christian,” and in
the midst of it to glorify God.
The most fiery trials often come
from those of our own house
holds. We are generally steeled
against those which come from
without, but the “fiery darts”
from members of our own body
burn with an intensity indeed.
The faithful wife with an unbe
lieving husband finds it hard to
fly to heaven with one wing; and
a Christian father with a wife
and family given over to world
liness and flouting at sacred
things does not find home a very
congenial place, and the fiery
trials burn deeply into his soul.
In the midst of these trials there
is only one safe refuge—prayer,
intense, continuous prayer; until
the glory of God rests upon us.
There is a place of victory even in
the fire, for the Master is with us
in it. If we “live godly in Christ
Jesus (we) shall suffer persecu
tion” (II Tim. 3:12). Therefore
let us expect it and “think it
not strange”; but when we "suf-

Marilyn deserves an "A” in Communications. Unfortunately, \ {'fry
that is not one of her courses.
Do you suppose when we were young we had less to talk
about? Fewer opinions worth stating? Quieter friends? Anyway,
home was never like this! / $

Still, apart from the inconvenience, I have no strong objec
tions to Marilyns monopoly of the wires. Indeed, it has served |p s '
to remind me more than once of the tremendous need of this (f \ jl
youthful generation for the right kind of friends and the right |
sense of values.
Fortunately, our church has been an important influence on
Marilyn’s life in both areas. Religious education has fostered
moral and religious convictions which are shaping her character.
Whether it’s "girl-talk” or "boy-talk” that is keeping our line
busy—it’s just part of the normal, wholesome growing-up of
a teen-ager.
