Devotional
By REV. FRANCIS FORD
Putor, Jenkinsburg United
Methodist Charge
For the next four weeks, I’d
like for us to think about Prayer.
Regardless of how strong or weak
a man’s faith may be, everyone
prays. Some people may not be
ready to admit it, but we all
pray at some time or another,
for one reason or another. To
day, let’s think about PRAYER
AND THE HUMAN SITUATION.
In the Book of Jeremiah, God
talks about prayer. He says “Call
unto me, and I will answer thee,
and show thee great and mighty
things, which thou knowest not.”
What kind of statement is this
that God is making? One that He
cannot keep? One that He is not
interested in keeping? Or is it a
promise that God is vitally in
terested in you and me?
One of the real hang-ups you
and I often have in prayer is
being able to believe that God
will answer prayer. Most all of us
believe that God can answer
prayer, but deep in our hearts
we silently wonder if God cares
enough about us to answer
prayer. We somehow picture God
as being far off and not too con
cerned about what is going on in
our personal lives. But God’s own
words that He spoke in Jeremiah
remind us that He is not a God
that dwells on the Borders of
Life; but that He is a God that
dwells in the Center of our Lives.
He is a God that involves Him
self in the midst of the human
situations we find ourselves in
and He cares enough about us,
not to leave us alone in these
situations. He calls us to come
and meet Him in the midst of
prayer. For He promises that as
we call upon Him, He will an
swer. James Montgomery wrote a
poem called “What is Prayer?”
Here’s what he says:
Prayer is the soul’s sincere de
sire, uttered or unexpressed; the
motion of a hidden fire, that
trembles in the breast. Prayer is
the burden of a sigh, the falling
of a tear; the upward glancing of
an eye, when none but God is
near. Prayer is the contrite sin
ner’s voice, returning from his
ways; while angels in their songs
rejoice, and cry “Behold, he
prays.”

As you gaze at this scene of snow, ice, and leafless trees,
your mind may skip ahead and picture green grass, abundant
foliage, and a rippling stream. The very thought brings happi
ness. Spring makes the difference.
As grass, trees, and streams are fettered by winter, so some
lives are bound by doubt, unbelief, lack of faith, and false
ideas. "When they come in contact with the Church, the love
of God sets them free. They see new beauty in everything about
them, and others see new beauty in their lives. As spring brings
all nature to new life, so God’s love makes human beings hap
pier, gives them life more abundant.
No matter how strong the fetters which bind you, freedom
can be yours through the Church and the message it brings to
all. Why not accept that freedom today?
