Students
Visit Center
by alfreiTwatkins
On Friday night, May 4th, a
L , ;ilU p of Science and Mathematics
students took a weekend field
Jnip to the state of Florida. The
U ip was highlighted by a guided
tour of the John F. Kennedy
."'pace Center. The 44 students
were accompanied by Mr. George
Tate, head of the Science Depart
ment, Miss Ruby Solomon, head
of the Mathematics Department,
and Mr. Emmitt Watkins, a
Mathematics instructor.
At approximately 11:30 p. m.
Friday night the group left Hen
derson High School for Cape Ken
nedy, Florida. At 7:40 a. m. the
Greyhound bus, loaded with 47
anxious tourists, pulled in at
Bethune-Cookman College in Day
tona Beach, Florida. While at the
college we freshened up and had
breakfast. Also, we toured the
college and saw several interes
ting attractions. We viewed the
grave of the founder of the col
lege, Mary McCleod Bethune.
Mrs. Bethune was a personal ad
visor of President Roosevelt. Mrs.
Bethune’s foundation, formerly
her home, is located on the cam
pus and is adorned with many
awards and trophies presented to
her. This was a very educational
adventure.
From there the group went to
Daytona Beach International
Raceway. This large structure is
where the Daytona 500 stock car
race is held. The 2% mile track
has two reclining walls angling
31 degrees.
At 9:05 Saturday morning we
departed from Daytona Beach on
our way to Cape Kennedy.
Finally 1 hour and 35 minutes
later the bus pulled in at the
Kennedy Space Center on the
coast of the Atlantic Ocean. The
Space Center is 88,175 acres.
While at the cape the group
toured the facilities on a bus
conducted by NASA, the National
Aeronautics and Space Admin
istration. We took a long ride
around the Space Center which
included a tour of the museum of
history of Cape Kennedy. We
saw some of the first rockets and
boosters used in outer space, and
viewed replicas of the Apollo 12
cone-shaped capsule and replicas
of the boosters. We also saw one
of the actual Gemini capsules
which has been in outer space.
One interesting factor about this
capsule is its heat shield. Then
we toured the largest building in
volume in the USA. The Indus
trial Building is so large four
Empire State Buildings could fit
in if they were cut in half. This
building is where the Apollo
spaceships are assembled.
The group left the Space Cen
ter at 3:20 p. m. We pulled in at
Sdver Springs, but unfortunately,
we were unable to see all the fa-

Take a good
■ V Rural America!
Look at the uncrowded countryside, with fresh air,
sun, water, good roads, transportation . . . And we're
making sure there's ample, low-cost electric power
available in our service areas . . .
But what Rural America needs are more job op
portunities, because millions of Americans would like
to live and work away from crowded cities . . .
We're joining hands with those who strive to re
store rural-urban balance, develop rural industry to
create jobs, and provide a future for local people.
Let's say it, loud and clear, to American industry:

CARD OF THANKS
To the wonderful people of
Jackson and Butts County, I
want to say thanks a million times
for being so nice to me while I
was in Griffin hospital and since
I’ve been home. Your prayers,
visits, flowers, cards, people like
you make this world a better
place in which to live. You all
mean more to me than you will
ever know. May God bless each
of you always. I want to share
this little poem I wrote myself.
I found a little remedy
To ease this life “we live,”
And make each day a “happier
one”
It is the word “forgive.”
God help me each day to train
my heart
That it will only sweetness hold,
And as the days and years roll
on
May I keep sweet as I grow old.
—Mrs. Guy Howard.
