REPENTANCE
Luke 13:1-5
“The fool hath said in his heart
there is no God.” Yet God is ev
erywhere. He is big enough to
fill the universe and small enough
to live in the heart of a saved
person. Those who seek God can
find Him. “When you seek me
with all your heart, I will be
found of you.” Jeremiah 29:13,-
14. Men try to find God in dif
ferent ways. The savage may in
flict punishment upon himself try
ing to find favor in the eyes of
his gods. The pagan may bow
down before idols which are dead.
Civilized people go to church but
yet come away with a hungry
heart. This is because they had no
intimate touch with Christ. Re
pentance is not a form of rit
uals but involves a personal en
counter with Jesus Christ. Re
pentance is the first step toward
God and no man reaches God un
til he takes that first step. Re-
pentance and faith are insepar
able graces. If a person really and
truly repents of sin he will exer
cise faith in Christ. If he exer
cises faith in Jesus Christ, it is
evidence that he has first re
pented of sin. Jesus had many
excuse makers in His day just as
we find today. They found ex
cuses for not following Him in
that day and they find excuses
for not following Him in this day.
Yet the Bible states unless a per
son repents he will surely perish.
God and heaven and eternal life
cannot belong to someone who
has not repented.
Repentance is a Biblical doc
trine. All the way back to the
prophets we find the doctrine of
repentance. Today people are call
ed on to repent. This is not pleas
ant to the natural man for it in
volves forsaking of sin. This will
cause many to rebel when con
fronted with giving up a pet sin
dear to their heart. Repentance
is not the fear of God. Some cry
out to God for forgiveness when
on the deathbed and when they
recover go right hack to their
old sin. This is not repentance but
the fear of God. “Today if ye
will hear his voice, harden not
your heart.” Hebrews 4:7. A per
son could weep rivers of tears,
clothe themselves in sack cloth
and ashes, yet a simple feeling
of sorrow over sin is not all of
repentance.
Repentance is not merely con
viction of sin. People may go to
church and come under deep con
viction. The Holy Spirit may con
vict them through sermon or song
and if nothing is done about it,
repentance does not follow. It is
not merely a profession of Christ
with the lips. It goes deeper than
that and changes the whole heart
and life. A mere profession of re
ligion which does not include a
turning away from sin and trust
ing the Saviour is not repentance.
It is more than merely being bap
tized and joining the church. It
is more than n religious form.
It is not being whitewashed in
baptism but being washed white
in the blood of the Lamb.
Repentance is a complete
change of heart and life. It is a
turning from sin to the Saviour.
Coming over to God's side
through His Son and taking His
side against sin. An unsaved man
marching toward Satan, sin and
hell with his back toward God,

Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Garland
have just returned from a visit
with I)r. and Mrs. William J.

Mr. and Mrs. Jackie Couch and

Lisa, Lorell Washington, Patty

a very enjoyable day.
Among those from Jackson at

Christ, the church und eternal
life can find himself with his
face toward God, Christ, the
church and heaven by taking two
steps, repentance and faith. If
we want Jesus more than any
thing ehe in this world we can
have Him for repentance brings
us into a right relationship with
Christ. Then rejoicing in our
heart follows when we have that
peace that passes all understand
ing. To go anywhere you must
take the first step. To get to
God you must take the first step
and that, my friends, is repent
ance.

People sometimes make cynical remarks about flag-waving-
M But it sure beats flag-burning.
Our belief in this nation is something far deeper than mere
i patriotism. It is the expression of honor and respect for the
hi institutions and blessings we possess as Americans.
I* I One of those institutions is a church independent of state
\ / control. One of those blessings is the right to worship according
11 to the dictates of conscience.
Of course, there are some earnest, well-meaning people
1 who don't give a nickel for the Church —orto it either. Even
f, 7 their right not to worship is equally guaranteed by our Coo*
