NOTICE OF BOND
ELECTION
TO THE QUALIFIED VOTERS
OF BUTTS COUNTY, GEORGIA:
YOU ARE HEREBY NOTI
FIED that on the 18th day of
August, 1970, an election will be
held in all the election districts of
said County, at which election
there will be submitted to
the qualified voters thereof
for their determination the
question of whether or not
bonds in the aggregate prin
cipal amount of $500,000 shall
he issued by Butts County School
District for the purpose of pro
viding funds to pay the cost of
acquiring, constructing and
equipping school buildings and
other buildings and facilities
useful or desirable in connection
therewith, adding to, renovating,
repairing, improving and equip
ping existing school buildings and
facilities of Butts County School
District, acquiring the necessary
property therefor, both real and
personal, and to pay expenses in
cident to accomplishing the fore
going; said bonds, if so authoriz
ed, are to be dated as of Septem
ber 1,1970, to be in the denomi
nation of $5,000 each, numbered
consecutively from 1 upward to
100, inclusive, in order of ma
turity, to bear interest from date
at such rate or rates not exceed
ing eight per centum (8%) per
annum in any year, all interest
payable January 1, 1971 and
semi-annually thereafter on the
Ist days of January and July in
each year and the principal to
mature on the Ist day of January,
lowest numbers first, in the years
and amounts, as follows:
SIO,OOO in each of the years
1972 to 1974, inclusive,
$15,000 in each of the years
1975 to 1977, inclusive,
$20,000 in each of the years
1978 to 1981, inclusive,
$25,000 in each of the years
1982 and 1983,
$20,000 in each of the years
1984 to 1980, inclusive,
$.‘15,000 in the year 1987,
$40,000 in each of the years
1988 and 1989,
$45,000 in each of the years
1990 and 1991.
The principal of and interest
on said bonds shall be payable in
lawful money of the United
States of America at a bank or
banks to he designated later.
Voters desiring to vote for the
issuance of said School Bonds for
the aforesaid purpose shall do so
by marking their ballots with a
cross or check mark in th<> square
to the left of the word “YES”
printed thereon and voters desir
ing to vote against the issuance
of said School Bonds for the
aforesaid purpose shall do so by
marking their ballots with a cross
or check mark in the square to
the left of the word “NO”
printed thereon, as to the ques
tion propounded, to-wit: “Shall
there be authorized to be issued
$500,000 Butts County School I
District Bonds”.
The several places for holding
said election shall be in the reg
ular and established election dis
tricts of Butts County* Georgia,
and the polls will be open from
7:00 o’clock A. M. to 7:00 o’-
clock I’. M. on the said date fixed
for the election.
All persons qualified to vote
in general elections and oidy
those registered and qualified to
vote in general elections will be
allowed to vote in this election.

Saturday, July 11, the 7th An
nual State 4-H Horse Show was
held at the Georgia Coliseum in
Athens.
Those attending the horse show
were district winners from all
over the state.
The Northwest District Horse
Show was held June 10 at Stone
Mountain. Susan Norton and Jen
ny Saunders attended from Butts
County. Susan won first place
in Senior Pole Pending and tied
for 2nd place in Senior Barrel
Race. Jenny Saunders entered
Junior Pole Bending and won
first place in Junior Barrel Race.
This entitled the girls to attend
the State 4-H Horse Show.
Saturday, Jenny Saunders won
sth place in the Junior Barrel
Race with a time of 19.14 sec
onds. She was riding her horse,
Prince Albert. She was compe
ting against 17 other 4H’ers
from over the state. Susan Nor
ton won first place in the Senior
Pole Bending with a time of 21.-
99 seconds. She was riding her
horse, Sonny. She was competing
against 10 other 4-H’ers from
over the state.
The District 4-H Horse Show
was sponsored by Central Geor
gia Electric Membership Corp.
with the State 4-H Horse Show
being sponsored by the Georgia
Rural Electric Cooperatives.
Putts County was well repre
sented by these two girls and we

ROY LECRAW TO PREACH
FOR PRESBYTERIANS
Col. Roy LeCraw, former At
lanta mayor and widely known
Presbyterian lay leader, will fill
the pulpit at the Jackson Presby
terian Church on Sunday, July
19th, at the 11:15 morning wor
ship service.
Mr. LeCraw has evidenced in
terest in the Jackson Presbyteri
an Church for a long number of
years, donating Bibles for the
pews, attending whenever in the
county, and having preached here
on several occasions. His zeal for
missionary work has taken him
and Mrs. LeCraw to several over
seas assignments.
Sunday School begins at 10
o’clock. Richard Watkins Jr. is
in charge of the service and will
introduce Mr. LeCraw.

Jackson Girls
At National
FHA Meeting
Renee Smith, a junior at Jack
son High School, and Mary Glide
well, a sophomore, are among
1500 delegates attending the
1970 national meeting of Fu
ture Homemakers of America,
July 11-17 in New York City.
Renee is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Robert E. Smith of
Route 4, Jackson. Mary is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh
Glidewell, Jackson. They joined
the Georgia delegation in At
lanta. The Georgia delegation of
Future Homemakers flew to New
York for the convention.
Kick-off for the observance of
FIIA’s 25th anniversary year, the
meeting will focus on the ob
jective “To Promote Communi
cation for the Enrichment of Hu
man Relationships” which FHA
members have chosen as A Dare
of the Decade.
Delegates will hear from out
standing speakers, hold “dele
gate retreats” and participate in
workshops on careers in home
economics conducted from the
various types of home economics
career fields. There will be time
for sight-seeing, visits to some
of the “wonders” of New York
City, and an evening of enter
tainment at New York’s famous
Radio City Music Hall.
The community of Butts Coun
ty was called upon to help send
Renee to National FHA Conven
tion. As usual, response was im
mediate. Renee and Mrs. Glen
Staples wish to thank all those
persons and businesses contribu
ting toward this worthwhile en
deavor.
Westbury
Volunteers
Meet Today
The volunteer workers of the
Westbury Home will meet in the
Chapel at 3 p. m. Thursday, July
16th. These ladies from the vari
our churches of the county will
organize more closely in order to
encourage all to further partici
pate in their fine program. A
president, vice president, and sec
retary will be elected.
This ministry has been of un
told value to guests at Westbury.
Many of the ladies have faith
fully given time each week to
help and encourage the folks at
Westbury’s. Several new ones
have recently joined the group.
The churches represented are
Macedonia, Jenkinsburg, Pepper
ton, Jackson First, and County
Line Baptist, also Jenkinsburg
Methodist. Westbury’s is very
grateful to all of these fine folks.

Mrs, Hayes, 94,
Butts Native,
Died July sth
Mrs. Lila Thaxton Hayes, 94,
of McDonough, died Sunday, July
sth, in an Atlanta hospital after
an illness of several days. She
would have been 95 years of age
had she lived to August sth.
Though Mrs. Hayes had been
afflicted with the usual infirm
ities of old age, she had generally
been in good health until four
days before her death.
Mrs. Hayes was a native of
Butts County and moved to
Henry County shortly after her
marriage, residing in the Bethany
Community since going to Henry
County and in the same house
for the last 60 years.
Services were held Tuesday
afternoon from Bethany Baptist
Church with Rev. C. C. Buckalew
officiating. Interment was in the
church yard cemetery.
Mrs. Hayes is survived by eight
children: Mrs. R. E. Minter of
McDonough, Miss Mae Hayes of
Decatur, Mrs. Clifford Mayo of
McDonough, Frank Hayes of
Hampton, Henry Hayes of Col
lege Park, Alfred Hayes of Mc-
Donough, Mrs. M. M. Wallace of
Morrow and Mrs. Emerson Elliott
of McDonough; 15 grandchildren;
nine great-grandchildren.
Wiener Roast
Tendered Ty
Cobb Winners
Parents of boys playing in the
Ty Cobb League, Yankee Team,
honored the boys for winning the
championship in their league by
giving a wiener roast at Indian
Springs State Park Saturday
afternoon. The coach for this
team was Wayne Cook with Bub
ber Jones as manager.
The guests ate to their hearts
content after which they played
games and went wading in the
creek at the Springs.
Among those present, in addi
tion to their parents, were Merle
and Allan Folsom, Cliff Polk,
Jimmy Moore, Jimmy Boyd, Mor
ris Smith, Jim Jones, Jeff Jones,
Scott Smith, Tim Colwell, Cary
Colwell, Gary Cook, Glenn Wil
liams, Deuce Williams, and
Ricky Cook.
W’esley Baker and Hal Latham
were unable to be present.

There will be a James Reunion
on Sunday, July 26, at Brack and
Cora Singley’s at the old home
place in Henry County. Brother
Franklin James and his wife from
Minden, La. will be present. All
members of the family are in
vited to attend.
Miss Webb Going
On Alaska Tour
Miss Lucy Jim Webb of Brooks-
Howell United Methodist Home
for retired Methodist deaconesses
and missionaries, Asheville, N. C.,
will take part in an Alaskan
travel seminar July 18-31 spon
sored by the United Methodist
Mission Board.
The Rev. Elmer I. Carriker,
who is a member of the staff at
Baker University, Baldwin City,
Kan. will be the leader. As well
as visiting “tourist attractions”
those taking part will visit Alaska
Methodist University and the
Jesse Lee Home for children in
Anchorage, the Lavinia Wallace
Young Community Center and the
Maynard MacDougall Memorial
Hospital at Nome. They also will
visit Ketchikan, Juneau, Kotze
bue, Fairbanks and the Mantan
uska Valley and Sitka.

gia Hospital last Thursday for
surgery.

ton Monday.
Mr. and Mrs. Dozier Dorsett
of St. Petersburg, Fla. are ex
pected July 20th for a ten day
visit.

Word has been received in
Jackson by relatives that Mr. and
Mrs. Claude M. Collins have
moved into their new home in
Colorado Springs, Colorado. Con
gratulations are being extended
by friends of this young couple.
Mrs. Collins will be remembered
as the former Elizabeth Mae Byrd
of Jackson.

Monticello To
Host All Night
Gospel Singing
Butts countians are invited to
an old fashioned gospel singing to
be held in the Monticello Gram
mar School auditorium on Sat
urday, August Bth, beginning at
7:30 p. m.
There will be no admission
charge since the event is spon
sored by Christians who are in
terested in seeing souls won for
Christ.
Some of the vocal groups that
will participate include: The
Crisp Family from Dalton; The
Christian Echoes from Monticel
lo; The Cornish Mountain Gang
and Cindy from Covington; The
Hamlin Family from Roberta;
and the Heavenly Love Trio, a
teenage group from Monticello.
There will be a testimony ser
vice held at intervals during the
singing. Refreshments will also
be available. Many of the groups
will have their latest records for
sale.
