GOD’S FAITHFULNESS
1 Samuel 12:19-25,
1 Kings 6:11-13
After the nation of Israel had
requested a king, God had given
them Saul, and Samuel called the
people together to proclaim the
kindgom and to remind them of
a number of things. To be sure
this message was backed up by
the Lord, he called on God to let
it thunder and rain, although
this seemed to be out of season.
Before the kingdom could be pro
perly established the people had
to return to God. The Lord does
great things for all men, but He
is especially willing to help those
who become converted. Let’s look
at the word conversion.
1. Conversion (1 Samuel 12:-
19, 20): Conversion means a com
plete reversal of direction. Aft
er hearing Samuel speak and aft
er they heard the thunder, the
people confessed their sin. Their
sin was in rejecting the rule of
God and wanting a substitute, a
king, of their own choice. They
were probably motivated by the
pagan nations all about them,
each of which was powerful and
had a human king. Where there
is confession there will always be
forgiveness. We confess our sins
and then we confess Christ as our
Lord. Then we are converted.
Conversion brings with it the
obligation to serve the Lord.
This is not in payment for our
salvation—no human works can
pay for that. It is both a recog
nition of Christ’s lordship and an
expression of gratitude to Him.
If there has been a genuine con
version there will also be a com
mitment to Christ. So let us look
at the word commitment.
2. Commitment (1 Samuel 12:-
21-26:) Commitment means a
turning over of our life to Christ.
One of the first evidences of
this is devotion to the Lord. The
unsaved man is usually devoted
to material progress or enjoy
ment, all of which is temporal. A
new convert often finds it easy to
testify. lie wants everyone to
know that Christ has become the
most important One in his life.
Too often there is a cooling off
after a while and the convert,
loses his “first love” as happened
at the Ephesus church (Rev. 2:-
4). Samuel spoke words of assur
ance to the people of Israel after

| Doyle Jones Jr. visited Sanders
1 Camp, publisher of The Walton
Tribune, in Monroe Thursday
afternoon.
I they had confessed and repented.
! This is what God requires of a
believer who has committed sin.
There is no other way back to
fellowship with Him. God re
quires a genuine change of min i
in reference to sin. God gives us
wonderful assurance and peace.
The one who has now committed
his life to Christ has now become
an intercessor. The people had
become alarmed when they real
ized that Samuel was going to re
tire. He gave them the promise
that he would not be gone al
together but that he would keep
praying for them. Christians
hould always pray. Wouldn’t
'he condition of the Church be
better if all the Christians prayed
for it? There is also a sober word
of warning. Not all who profess
conversion have really been
saved. If men continue in wicked
ness in spite of their profession
God will chastise them (1 Samuel
12:26). Then we come to the
word confirmation.
3. Confirmation (1 Kings 6:11-
13): This promise was given
while King Solomon was building
the first Temple. Until then there
had been only the Tabernacle.
God had not commanded the
building of the Temple as He had
that of the Tabernacle. However
God accepted the Temple when
it was dedicated to Him. Christ
called the Temple a “house of
prayer,” but He charged the peo
ple with making it “a den of
thieves.” God commanded certain
conditions to be observed if the
Temple was to serve as a blessing.
He required that the king and all
the people give exact obedience to
His commands. No man ever did
and that is one reason that the
Temple was eventually destroyed.
Our churches have been set apart
for worship; and we should not
use them for purposes that dis
honor God. If God’s conditions
are met, He has assured us that
He will dwell among us and not
forsake us. No matter how plain
or insignificant u building may
seem to be, if it has been set
apart for God we can be sure
that it is a place the Lord rec
ognizes.

Sometimes grownups say wistfully,
*1 wish 1 were that age again." But do
they really wish it? Being a child is won
derful, but maturing can be a painful
process.
Help your children enjoy the precious
childhood hours —never forgetting that
they must grow up. Remember you have
a never-ending source of guidance. The
church will help your children preserve
the spirit of youth and give them the
wisdom, courage and faith that will
sustain them through the rest of their
lives.
