Thomp son, Vincent Jones defeated B. H. Hodges for state senator from the 22nd district by 72 votes and Dan Fears had a plurality of 880 over his nearest opponent in his race for representative. A contract has been signed by the Butts County Commissioners for a modern health center to serve all the county. The federal government, the state of Georgia and the county of Butts will all share in the expenses, the govern ment to bear the major part of the cost, estimated at SBO,OOO. Living within two miles of Jackson, Tab Hardy, widely known as a mechanic of skill and ability has not been to town in six years, according to informa tion given at the Progress-Argus office Monday by Mrs. Hardy. Jackson City Council at its reg ular meeting passed an ordinance requiring a physical examination by all those handling food and milk and other food products, and for domestic servants, nurses, midwives and launderers. N. F. Land, widely known civic ’eader and actively interested in welfare work has been named as a member of the Butts County Welfare Board to succeed J. D. Jones Sr. whose term expired July 1. The fire is thought to have started from the stove and had gained considerable head way when detected by passersby and the family aroused. Mr. Alvin W. Plymale, aged 30, was instantly killed Saturday morning at a sawmill place on the Gunn place near Indian Springs when struck by a limb of a tree. One of the largest and most destructive forest fires in the history of Middle Georgia wiped out a large area of timber lands and destroyed several dwellings near High Falls in Monroe Coun ty, across the Towaliga River from Butts County. The death of Mrs. Gordon H. Thompson, one of Butts County’s most useful and widely beloved women, occurred Tuesday morn ing at the Griffin Hospital. A very large circle of relatives and friends were distressed to learn of her passing which came after a long and painful illness and a critical condition that had existed for several days.
