MAN OF THE SILENT MAJORITY
“There was a day when this land we call home was furrowed
and planted and when most of th e South’s dollars came from
fields tilled by both white and black hands.
Those days are gone forever and they aren’t coming back.
The fields are still fertile and they do not lie idle, but ma
chines have replaced the aching backs and sweating brows. As
we move into the 70’s we are going to be competing in a
much more sophisticated and industrialized world and we are
going to need every brain and every pair of skilled hands we
can turn up.
No one is going to give us anything. We’ll have to earn
our own way. Wants, necessities and luxuries; better schools,
better roads, better mental institutions —even clean air and
wate r—can only be assured by the true wealth of a nation,
a region or a state —its people. We all want a better life.
One that is full and enriched, not only by material things,
but by moral and spiritual values that keep families and com
munities working and striving together, sharing the good
with the bafl.
To attain it, we will have to guarantee every citizen the
opportunity to be a producer, to make sure that every indi
vidual carries his share of the load and that every person
calling himself a Georgian is able to contribute.
We desperately need unaverage leaders today who aren’t
afraid to challenge, to dream, to inspire and to reach for the
unreachable star. This is the only way we are going to become
a little better than we’ve ever been before.”

BIG PIG CROP
The nation’s pig crop for 1970
could be the largest in 27 years.
The Georgia Crop Reporting Ser
vice says the spring and fall pig
crop should total 101.8 million
head. If this figure holds true
this would be 14 percent higher
than last year and the largest pig
crop since 1943.
