Philippine Islands Was
Setting For Hopkins-
Warner Nuptials Aug. 24th
BLACKSBURG, VA.—The Lu
theran Service Center Chapel in
Olongapi City, the Philippine
Islands, was the setting for the
early morning marriage of Miss
Dawn Marie Hopkins and Seaman
Page Warner, United States
Navy, on Monday, August 24. The
double-ring ceremony was per
formed by the Reverend Arthur
Meyers.
The bride is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. James Wesley Hop
kins of Blacksburg and the grand
daughter of Mrs. Robert Craw
ford Edwards of Jackson. Mrs.
Hopkins is the former Dawnie
Ruth Edwards of Jackson.
The groom is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Eugene Spurgeon War
ner of Blacksburg.
Attired in a street-length dress
of white serano trimmed in
double rosepoint lace and a
shoulder-length veil of silk illus
ion edged in matching rosepoint,
the bride carried her bouquet on
a silk-covered heirloom prayer
book used by her family for al
most two hundred years. She was
given in marriage by P/C Chief
Carl Montoya and attended by
Maid-of-Honor Vicki Lorraine
Warren.

ty are stationed at Subic Naval
Base, the Philippine Islands.
Both the bride and the groom
were graduated from Blacksburg
High School; the groom attended
Roanoke College before entering
the service.
The couple will reside in Subic
Bay, where the groom is sta
tioned.

Mrs. Howard Gunn of Jackson
announces the marriage of her
daughter, Jane Hightower, to
Charles W. Helms, son of Mrs.
Leola Neal of Rome. The cere
mony took place August 21st at
six-thirty o’clock in the after
noon at the home of the groom’s
mother. The Rev. Nathan Wooten
of Dalton performed the cere
mony.
Following the ceremony a re
ception was held at the home of
Mrs. Bill Barlow, sister of the
groom.

friends for a tour of Underground
Atlanta Saturday night.

Last week Hugh Glidewell, Jr.
attended the Delta Tau Delta
National Convention in Toronto,
Canada. As president he repre
sented Epsilon Alpha Chapter of
Auburn University and attended
the Executive Committee meeting
before the convention.

where they will be stationed until
January. They will then leave for
Heidelberg, Germany for 17
months.

are making their home in Pensa
cola, Fla., where he is stationed.

Brother of Mrs.
Gray Passes at
Home in Rome
Mr. John T. Mitchell, brother
of Mrs. Mary Ann Gray of Jack
son, died Tuesday night, August
25th, at his home at 715 Avenue
A, Rome.
Mr. Mitchell was a retired
grocery owner.
Funeral services were conduc
ted Thursday afternoon at four
o’clock from the chapel of Jen
nings Funeral Home in Rome
with burial in City Cemetery.
Mr. Mitchell is survived by his
wife, Mrs. Berta Terrell Mit
chell; one son, Wyman Mitchell
of Houston, Texas; three daugh
ters, Miss Martha Joy Mitchell of
Memphis, Tenn., Miss Aralyn
Mitchell and Mrs. Judy Williams,
of Rome; one brother, Jack Mit
chell of Yatesville; five sisters,
Miss Sally Mitchell and Mrs. Jac
quelyn Benefield, of Yatesville;
Mrs. Cora Traylor of Meansville,
Mrs. Mary Ann Gray of Jackson,
and Mrs. Ruth Boyt of Forsyth;
several grandchildren, nieces and
nephews.

Julian Thurston,
Jackson Native,
Died Aug. 12th
Mr. Julian Thurston, 70, died
Wednesday, August 12th, in a
hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa. Mr.
Thurston had a stroke in March
of this year and had been in de
clining health since.
He was a resident of Port
Richey, Fla., having retired and
moved there six years ago after
residing in Pittsburgh 42 years.
He was affiliated with the Amer
ican Oil Cos. for 40 years. He was
moved to the home of his daugh
ter, Mrs. Annette Casto, about
six weeks prior to his death.
Mr. Thurston was a native of
Jackson and was the son of the
late John Robert Thurston and
Mrs. Kitty O’Rear Thurston.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. May Kimbell Thurston; four
sons, Kimbell and Gerald of
Pittsburgh, Dan of Cincinnati,
Ohio and Jim of Tampa, Fla.; five
daughters, Mrs. Annette Casto,
Mrs. Margaret O’Brien, Mrs. Jane
Bolton of Pittsburgh, Mrs. Marion
Breson of Erlanger, Kentucky
and Mrs. Martha Casto of Orlan
do, Fla.; a brother, Dan Thurs
ton of Port Richey, Fla.; a sister,
Mrs. Grace Pettigrew of North
Augusta, S. C., grandchildren,
great grandchildren and relatives
in this area.
Those attending the funeral
in Pittsburgh at the Herschberg
Funeral Home were Mrs. Gladys
Wilson of Jackson, Mrs. V. A.
Kimbell of Griffin, Mrs. Betty
Bohannon of Atlanta, Mrs. Dolly
Ann Marchman and Miss Patrice
Marchman of Flovilla. Also Dan
Thurston and Rev. Carl Bailey of
Port Richey, Fla. attended. Rev.
Bailey was the pastor of the Jas
mine Lakes Baptist Church,
where Mr. Thurston was a mem
ber, a deacon and treasurer of
the church. He also formerly
taught the Men’s Class in Sunday
School. Interment was in Charti
ers Cemetery, Crafton, Pa.
