Volunteers
Can Save
Many Lives
In Butts County 76 people are
living as cured cancer patients.
These people are alive today be
cause they saw their doctors in
time and were able to undergo
proper treatment immediately.
During 1970 in Butts County
15 people will die of cancer.
Many of these will die because
they did not see their doctors in
time.
The American Cancer Society
urges Earlier Treatment Educa
tion as a means of saving lives in
our county. Already this fall,
education programs have been
held in Henderson School and
Jackson High School. The ele
mentary school children saw films
on the health dangers of cigarette
smoking. Your girls in grades
nine through twelve saw a film
on Breast Self-Examination as a
preventive method fo r breast
cancer. Female teachers at Jack
son High saw this film, also.
Just since the beginning of the
year, the American Cancer So
ciety has spent $116.57 on pain
relieving drugs for cancer pa
tients in Butts County, One-hun
dred, forty-eight dollars have
been spent by the Society during
1970 on transportation for can
cer patients to cancer clinics. Ten
cancer patients are being helped
by the Society thus far.
With more volunteer assist
ance, the American Cancer Soci
ety could expand its programs of
education and service in Butts
County. Volunteers are needed to
serve on committees of Earlier
Treatment Education, Volunteer
Patient Services, Memorials, and
others. Specific volunteer pro
jects include telephoning, typing,
clerical assistance, public speak
ing, making bandages, securing
gift and loan items for patients
(such as aspirin, soap, hospital
beds, wheel chairs, etc.), visiting
cancer patients, driving patients
to and from cancer clinics ope
rating film projectors for pro
grams, manning exhibits and
others.
In order to save more lives
from cancer, volunteers are urg
ently needed to assist the Amer
ican Cancer Society. Those in
terested should contact field rep
resentative Alan Anthony at 404-
355-4940.
CARD OF THANKS
I wish to express my appreci
ation to my many friends and
relatives for their visits, flowers,
gifts, cards, and prayers while
I was in the Macon Hospital and
during my recent stay in an At
lanta hospital and since returning
home. My sincere thanks to you
for your kindness and willingness
to help in so many ways at a
time when I was unable to do
things for myself and family. I
am grateful for your love and
concern. May God richly bless
you.—Mrs. Steve Harkness.

Police Crack
Down on Mini-
Bikes and Carts
The City of Jackson is begin
ning a strict campaign against
operators of Mini-Bikes and Go-
Carts so that it can be deter
mined that they comply with a
Georgia law that defines a Go-
Cart as a motor vehicle and the
operator must be licensed; the
Go-Cart must be registered, in
spected annually, equipped with
headlights, stop lights, and turn
signals.
The Georgia law also requires
that the operator of a Mini-Bike
must be licensed; the Mini-Bike
must be equipped with headlights
and stop lights.
Jackson Police Chief Watson
Vaughn emphasizes that the
above mentioned regulations are
part of a state law and that this
law will be enforced in the City
of Jackson. Chief Vaughn re
quests the cooperation of Mini-
Bike and Go-Cart operators and
their parents in seeing that the
necessary regulations are adhered
to so that no cases need be made
against offenders.

Teeth Chatter
In 15 Degree
Cold Tuesday
Teeth chattered and feet grew
cold fast Tuesday morning as the
coldest weather of the Fall sea
son scored record lows in this
vicinity, with thermometers gen
erally registering 15 or 16 de
grees in most areas of the county.
A cold front moved across the
Southeast Sunday night and Mon
day with cold winds, gusting to
more than 20 miles per hour Mon
day and Monday night, making
the chill factor even more dis
agreeable and seemingly colder
than it really was. However, tem
peratures fell below the freezing
mark early Monday night with
the cold winds plunging the mer
cury to 14 degrees in Atlanta.
Weathermen at the National
Weather Service in Atlanta fore
cast moderating temperatures for
Thursday and Friday, that actual
ly began Wednesday, with a pos
sibility of showers in the Atlanta
area Friday, with cloudy and
cool weather for Saturday.
