Thanks be unto God for his
unspeakable gift. II Cor. 9:15
While leafing through a very
old Commentary, 1 discovered this
poem appropriate for any season
but especially Thanksgiving.
The stall fed ox, that is grown
fat, will know
His careless feeder, and ac
knowledge too;
The generous puppy loves his
master’s eye,
And licks his fingers though no
meat be by;
But man, ungrateful man,
that’s born and bred
By Heaven’s immediate power;
maintained and fed
By God’s providing hand; ob
served, attended,
By God’s indulgent grace; pre
served, defended,
By God’s prevailing arm: this
man I say,
Is more ungrateful, more ob
dure than they.
Man, Oh most ungrateful man;
can ever enjoy
The gift, but never mind the
Giver;
And like swine, though pam
pered with the broth,
Have eyes that raise no higher
than the trough.
Author Unknown
Though some say they are
grateful to God, they treat His
blessings as though they them
selves engineered them. Such are
immune to the inner joy of whol
ly depending on God for life here
and for eternity. The great penal
ty for ingratitude is that of get
ting used to it, until one is alone.
If truly redeemed, we can never
cease to thank God for the un
speakable gift of his Son, with
out whom there is no access to
God or his Kingdom.
A little girl eargerly eyed the
candy jar in a grocery store. The
kind and sympathetic store keep
er removed the lid, and lowering
the jar within her reach said:
“Take some; take a whole hand
full." With real wisdom she re
plied: “I’d rather you give me a
handful. Your hand is a lot big
ger than mine.” God’s hand is
much larger than ours. Remember
this and have a happy Thanks
giving.

Everyone loves a bargain—whether it's Mother
in the local supermarket, or Dad laying in a supply
of shotgun shells for the hunting season or Junior
buying his candy bars at three for a dime. And
what fun it is to tell our friends of the lucky pur
chase—even if, in the final accounting, the results
are somewhat dubious!
But think of the many bargains about which
we have no doubt really big, genuine bargains
. . . like the beautiful color of leaves on an autumn
day or the aroma of roast turkey that's in the
kitchen stove at this very minute. And, since it's
Thanksgiving, it is only appropriate that we should
mention the tremendous bargain of our heritage
and freedom.
When you come to think of it, we are always
getting more than we are giving. We are on the
receiving end. The biggest part of our life the
overwhelming part of our life is what is given
to us.
Let us then become conscious of our moment
by-moment dependence on God, the awareness
of life as a gift. For what is religion but receiving,
seeing, believing, praising and thanking God?
