Funeral Mrs.
Whitaker This
Afternoon
Mrs. Coral Colwell Whitaker,
84, widow of Mr. John Lo Whit
aker, Sr. of Jenkinsburg, died at
9:25 o’clock Tuesday night, De
cember 15th, at Sylvan Grove
Hospital after an illness of sev
eral months.
Mrs. Whitaker was born in
Butts County on January 25,
1880 and was the daughter of
the late Mr. James G. Colwell of
Spalding County and Mrs. Mary
Jester Colwell of Butts County.
She was a member of the Jenk
insburg United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held
Thursday afternoon, December
17th, at two o’clock in the chape!
of Haisten Funeral Home with
Rev. Francis Ford, pastor of the
Jenkinsburg Charge, officiating.
Interment will be in Jenkinsburg
Cemetery with Haisten Funeral
Home in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Whitaker is survived by
three daughters, Mrs. C. L. Dom
iny of Carrollton, Mrs. T. A.
Larus of Decatur, Mrs. R. H.
Burford of Jackson; four sons,
James F. Whitaker, Glen J.
Whitaker and John Lo Whitaker,
Jr., all of Jenkinsburg, R. W.
(Bobby) Whitaker of Jackson; a
sister, Mrs. C. L. Thaxton of
Jenkinsburg; a brother, Elmo
P. Colwell, Sr. of Jackson; 14
grandchildren; 2 great grand
children.
Pallbearers will be Elmo Col
well, Jr., George Colwell, John
ny Colwell, Powell Colwell, Alton
Colwell and Charles Sims.

Theft at Butts

The home of Mrs. Joe Reeves
m the Goody District was bur
glarised Saturday night, Decem
ber sth, with the theft of several
items not being missed and re
ported until Sunday morning.
The Butts County Sheriff’s De
i part men t reported that ten shot
guns and rifles, three bows and
arrows and two guitars were
taken from the dwelling Satur
day night while the house was
unoccupied. It i.- not known how
the burglar or burglars entered
the house but no signs of forced
entry were discovered, according
to the -heriff’s department. A
possible suspect in the case is
being investigated.
CAR STOLEN
HERE MONDAY
A 1958 Chevrolet belonging to
Mrs. Nell Carmichael, Butts
County Tax Receiver, was stolen
from her driveway on Dempsey
Avenue eithe r Monday night or
Tuesday morning, the car being
missed first Tuesday morning
when Mrs. Carmichael went to
use it on her way to work.
Mrs. Carmichael said that she
“didn’t know anything except
that the car was gone,” and that
the keys were in her pocketbook.
Early Tuesday morning she and
her daughter, Miss Jane Carmich
ael, had gone outside to put a
package in the car for mailing,
when they discovered it was mis
sing.
The Jackson Police Department
and the Butts County Sheriff’s
Department are investigating the
auto theft.

Escapee Is
Caught In
Monroe Cos.
Freedom was short lived for a
i 21-year-old inmate of the Geor
gia Diagnostic and Classification
i Center who escaped Wednesday
, afternoon, December 9th, from
an outside work detail about 3:30
o’clock and was captured Thurs
day morning about 6:15 o’clock
in Monroe County by the Mon
roe County Sheriff’s Depart
ment.
A spokesman for the State
Board of Corrections said Roland
Kicklighter, of Metter, walked
away from the prison facility
while on a landscaping detail.
Kicklighter was serving a three
year sentence for burglary.
CARS COLLIDED TUESDAY
ON COVINGTON HIGHWAY
The collision of two cars on
Route 36 North about 2:45 o’-
clock Tuesday afternoon damaged
one automobile to the extent of
several hundred dollars, accord
ing to the Butts County Sheriff’s
Department.
Involved in the mishap were
Mrs. C. W. Haley of Jackson who
was traveling in the direction of
Jackson when a vehicle driven by
Claude C. (Dude) Bell backed
from a road near the Tussahaw
Creek Bridge and into the path
of the Haley car. The sheriff’s
department reported no injuries.

Junkyards, trash dumps, gaudy
signs, service areas and other
unsightly elements along our
roads and streets are now being
classified as visual pollution. If
communities are to remain attrac
tive and liveable, this visual pol
lution must be battled along with
water and air pollution.

At National
Vo-Ag Meet
Over five hundred teachers of
Vocation Agriculture met in
New Orleans, Louisiana recently
for the 22nd annual convention
of the National Vocational Agri
cultural Teachers’ Association.
James E. McCormick, vocational
agricultural instructor from the
Henderson Jr. high school was an
official delegate from the Geor
gia Association.
The NVATA has a membership
of over 10,000 teachers of voca
tional agriculture with members
from all of the states. There are
450 members in the Georgia Asso
ciation. Millard Gundlach, Mont
fort, Wis. is president of the Na
tional Association; James Wall,
Lincoln, Nebraska is the Execu
tive Secretary, Sam Stenzel of
Colby, Kansas is the treasurer.
D. P. Whitten of Centre, Ala.,
is the vice president for Region
five of which Georgia is one of
the six in this Region.

Scott Coleman of Jackson,
Miss, will enter Piedmont Hos
pital this week and is scheduled
for surgery on December 18th.
After surgery he will recuperate
at home with his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. John L. Coleman.
Johnny W. Caldwell reported
Monday for basic training at
Fort Jackson, S. C. Son of Mr.
and Mrs. Jack Caldwell, he was
at home for the weekend, to
gether with Michael Caldwell,
and Miss Lynda Caldwell of At
lanta.
Mr. and Mrs. Max Redman
were dinner guests at a family
Christmas dinner at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lane in
Monticello recently.
