Basketball (?)
Game On
Friday Night
BY DON EARNHART
WJGA Captain
The disk jockies of WJGA will
me et the Jackson Jaycees in a
basketball battle on Dec. 18th
that will be played in the Jackson
gym.
The proceeds will be donated
to the Jaycee Empty Stocking
Fund. Admission will be a mere
fifty cents. (Cheap, cheap).
Starting for the WJGA team
will be:
Don Earnhart. Named captain
because of his total absence of
any knowledge of sports. The
WJGA team wanted to bring
some fresh ideas into the game
and this was the best way they
felt to achieve this. (He brought
some fresh ideas alright, some
of his ideas were so fresh they had
to be mailed out in plain manila
envelopes. It would have been the
first basketball game rated “X”)
He will be playing center, not
due to any athletic ability, but
because he thinks that the center
always stands in the center of
the court and he won’t have to
run so far.(?)
Charlie Brown, guard. Charlie
will be playing his first basketball
game and he says he hopes to
break all his past records for high
scoring. He wants all his friends
to come out and watch him as he
trys to set the indoor world rec
ord for the tripple, free hand,
double back, under the net one
legged flip shot while drinking a
glass of water. Charlie says he
plans to always guard the goal to
his left. When asked why, he said
that an aerosal spray will be his
right guard. (?)
Ed Hoard, guard. Ed Hoard
will bring into the game a degree
of sophistication not usually as
sociated with the bump and grind
of sports. His will be the corner
to watch for the ultimate in the
cool sure confident air of the pol
ished sportsman. When asked by
his fellow disk jockeys how he
will do all this, in this his first
game, he replied that he had de
decided to play in clean socks and
had even bought anew pair of
jockey shorts for the occasion.
(?)
Howard Lovett, forward. How
ard will be playing in his first
basketball game of his long ca
reer. (Which never did include
any sports). Howard lost all in
terest in sports after he had a
bad experience back in high
school in a torch relay race. How
ard misunderstood the exact goal
of the torch relay race and in
stead of running the fastest he
thought you should have the big
gest torch so before they could
catch him and get him stopped, he
had set fourteen fields, two
barns, and an outhouse on fire.
He says he’ll be hot Friday night.
(?)
Terry Kitchens, forward. Terry
is the salesman at the station
and he will be using some of his
salesmanship on the Jaycees Fri
day night. You will notice that
the rules of basketball do not
mention at any place that it is
illegal to twist arms. That says
Terry is the secret of success.
Terry says he’s going to spot the
Jaycees 20 yards. (?)
Herbert Shapard, backward.
Herbert will be filling in for the
regular players when they need
to rest or get a drink of water
or be excused. Too much cannot
be said about Herbert but since
be is the boss it won’t be said
here. (?)
Buste r Duke, play by play an
nouncer. Buster will be calling
the game and taking it easy. He
might fill in for a regular player
if the need arises and you can
bet if the need arisese there will
have been a major catastrophe on
the court. On second thought,
Buster said if it’s that rough just
count him out.
Johnny Smoolka, referee. John
ny will be the official and his
word will be final. He wants it
understood right away that when
he says that one of the disk
jockys have been fouled, he wants
to see blood. (?)
Duard Forquared, engineer on
‘ The Young Sounds” at night.
Duard will be unable to play as
he will be out of town trying to
find his mother so she can be out
of jail in time fo r Christmas. (?)
Playing for the ‘‘over the hill
Jaycees: Donnie Phillips, Bub
Rid gway, D-on Montgomery,
ayne Phillips, Seabie Maddox,
Tony Thurston, Charles Daniel,
Danny Hoard, Herman Waits,
Randy Hardy, Larry Pickett,
Kenny Waits, Mike Luzier, Dar
lell Pippin and others who will
come forward. The referee for
the Jaycees will be Joe “over the
hill” Brown.
The game will start at eight
sharp and Heaven only knows
when it will end.
