Signs Better
Living Seen
In Butts Cos.
(Special to the Progreti-Argus)
NEW YORK, Nov. 14— Judg
ing: from the numbe r of big-ticket
household accessories that Butts
County families have been ac
quiring during the last few years,
living standards are on the rise
locally.
Their purchases of dishwashers,
air conditioners, stereophonic
equipment, cars and other high
priced equipment have been
climbing steadily since 1960.
It is directly attributable to
the income gains chalked up in
the period by most local families.
The extent to which ownership
of automobiles and household ap
pliances has increaed is based up
on a special sample survey made
by the Department of Commerce
and data from other sources.
Thei r figures show that there
is a direct relationship between
a family’s earning capacity and
the amount of expensive durables
that it amasses over the years.
In Butts County, on the
strength of these findings, no less
than 18.1 percent of the local
families are the owners of two
or more cars at the present time.
This compares with 13.3 percent
in 1960.

crease, also, in the number of
families with television sets. This
has been due, to a large extent, to
the growth of color TV.
Approximately 92.0 percent of
the households in the local area
now have television sets, as com
pared with 77.8 percent in 1960.
Similarly, more homes are
equipped with washing machines
than was the case then. Owner
ship in Butts County’s regional
area is placed at 68.0 percent.
This re'ates only to outright
ownership. Actually, the propor
tion of families that have wash
ing machines available to them
is greater than that because inany
rental units are equipped with
them.
The survey, which presents
data on a national and regional
basis, also shows an increase in
the proportion of families with
clothes dryers, hi-fi sets and free
zer units. Home ownership has
also been on the rise.
All of it has been made possi
ble by incomes that have gone up
sufficiently, after absorbing the
increase in living costs, to pro
vide these extras.
GOOD FOR KEEPING
Home freezing is good for
keeping meat. It’s a safe, easy
way to preserve meats. Remem
ber, freezing does not improve
meat. However, if high quality
meat is properly packaged in
moisture-vapor-proof material it
will retain the original flavor,
color and nutritive value.

NEW YORK, Oct. 10—How
has the average Butts County
family been making out in the
nip and tuck race between ris
ing incomes and rising living
costs?
To what extent have higher
prices and bigger taxes eaten
into the income gains chalked up
in the last five years?
The before and after figures
show that although inflation has
channeled off a considerable part
of these gains, leaving some peo
ple with little to show for their
increased earnings, the majority
are better off than they were
previously.
The yardstick by which this is
determined is purchasing power—
now as compared with five years
ago.

can buy with the amount he earns

able on the basis of data released
by the Bureau of Labor Statistics,
the Tax Foundation and others.
They show that he now earns
enough, after 22 minutes on the
job, to buy a pound of smoked
ham or a pound of frozen filet
of haddock.
To purchase two dozen eggs
(grade A large) or two pounds of
ground beef for hamburgers or
a package of 96 tea bags takes
approximately 37 minutes. They
would have taken much longer
in 1965.
To buy a pair of child’s shoes,
medium grade, or a woman’s
wool skirt involves 242 minutes
of work.
The actual store prices of these
and other goods and services are
considerably higher than they
were in 1965 but, when they are
related to work time, they cost
less.
The answer lies in the earning
capacity of the average Butts
County family, which has risen
in the past five years by 27
percent. By way of comparison,

Just how the working day of
the average American is budgeted
to take care of his various obli

It shows that taxes are the
biggest item. They take 2 hours

Next are food and tobacco, with

The rest of the time goes to
