Mr. John Leonard Lyons, 92,
one of Jackson’s oldest and most
prominent citizens, died Saturday
night in the Pineworth Nursing
Home near Macon following an
extended illness.
The Department of Health, Ed
ucation and Welfare Monday ap
proved a $251,020 Hill-Burton
grant to Butts County Hospital
Authority toward $570,500, cost
of the new 28 bed Sylvan Grove
Hospital in Jackson, according to
word received in Jackson late
Monday afternoon.
Miss Laura Woodward, 88, last
member of a prominent Butts
County family, died Tuesday
afternoon at a private hospital
in Quitman following an extend
ed illness.

100th anniversary on Monday

Frank C. Hearn, Butts County
School Superintendent, has been
named by Mayor W. M. Redman
as director of Civilian Defense in
the city.
Members of the serving com
mittee, the friends of Kiwanis,
had the privilege of being served
by officers and directors of the
club at the Tuesday night meet
ing. This turn of the tables and
reversal of form was a novel ex
perience for the faithful group
who work unselfishly during the
year to see that Kiwanians are
well fed.
The Freeman Lumber Cos. plan
ing mill on the Jackson and Mon
ticello Road was destroyed by
fire early Saturday.
Wiley Shannon, Negro, is held
in the Butts County jail on a
charge of snuffing out the life
of his wife, Margie Shannon, with
a blast from a shotgun about one
p. m. Thanksgiving Day.

B. K. Carmichael, Jackson
druggist and civic leader, has
been appointed and accepted the
chairmanship for Butts County
of the Young Democratic Club
of Georgia.
With an increase in salary
granted the pastor, the Rev. J.
C. Calloway, and the budget,
largest in recent years, paid in
full, the Jackson Methodist
Church is asking for the return
of Mr. Calloway for another
year of service.
Red noses, red flannels and a
wild scramble for cover and a
stampede to have antifreeze put
in automobiles resulted from the
November freeze, most severe in
60 years of the weather bureau.
Ganes Evans O’Neal, 15-year
old son of Mr. and Mrs. G. C.
O’Neal of the Cedar Rock Com
munity, died Sunday at 9 a. m.
after a lingering illness.
The death of Mr. William R.
Dorsett, 88 years of age, occurred
December Ist at 11:30 a. m. at
his home in St. Petersburg, Flori
da, where he had resided for the
past several years.

The dwelling of Mr. and Mrs.
R. C. Thomas in Iron Springs
district was consumed by fire
early Sunday morning. The entire
building was destroyed and only
a small amount of furniture and
wearing apparel and other art
icles wei'e saved.
Mr. H. O. Ball entertained the
directors of the Kiwanis Club of
Jackson at dinner at his home
on Covington Street Thursday
evening of the past week. An ele
gant dinner was served by Mrs.
Ball.
William W. Wright was elec
ted as president of the Kiwanis
Club Tuesday night by a unani
mous vote. Other officers include
D. P. Settle, vice president, A.
W. Newton, treasurer and R. J.
Carmichael, district trustee.
Miss Elsma Morgan, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Morgan of
Stark, has been announced as a
winner of the trip to Chicago to
the National Club Congress given
by the Montgomery Ward Com
pany for general excellence in
club work.

will be delighted to know that
she continues to improve follow
ing a recent illness.
