IF CHRIST HAD COME
In the midst of happy hearts
made glad by the presence of
friends and loved ones, bountiful
blessings, inspiring music and the
high moments of worship during
Christmas ... it is an arresting
thought to imagine “WHAT
W OULD OUR WORLD BE LIKE
IF JESUS HAD NOT COME.”
A striking card was once pub
lished with the title “If Christ
Had Not Come.” It was based
upon Jesus Christ, our Saviour’s
own words “IF I HAD NOT
COME” (John 15:22). The card
represented a clergyman falling
into a short sleep in his study
on Chrismas morning and dream
ing of a world into which Jesus
had never come.
In his dream he found himself
looking through his home, there
were no little stockings in the
chimney corner, no Christmas
bells, no wreaths of holly. He
walked out on the street, but
there was no church, with its
spire pointing to Heaven. He
came back and sat down in his
library, but every book about the
saviour had disappeared.
A ring of the door-bell, and a
messenger asked him to visit a
poor, dying mother. He hastened
with the weeping child, and as
he reached the home he sat down
and said “I have something here
that will comfort you.” He opened
his Bible to look for a familiar
promise, but it ended wth Mala
chi, and there was no glorious
Gospel and no promise of hope
and salvation, and he could only
bow his head and weep with her
in deep and bitter despair. Two
days afterward he stood beside
her coffin and conducted the fu
neral service, but there was no
message of consolation, no word
of glorious resurrection.
Suddenly he awoke with a
start, and a great shout of joy
and praise burst from his lips as
he heard his choir singing in his
church close by:
“0 come, all ye faithful, joy
ful and triumphant;
O come ye, 0 come ye to Beth
lehem.
Come and behold Him, born the
King of angels.
O come let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.”
Let us be glad and rejoice be
cause “Christ HAS come.” “This
is a faithful saying, and worthy
of all acceptation, that Christ
Jesus came into the world to save
sinners ...” (Timothy 1:15)
Today He stands knocking at
your heart’s door, asking that
you—the sinner—will let Him in.
“Wherefore He IS able to save
them to the uttermost that come

FROZEN FRUIT
With shortcake, on ice cream
or all by itself frozen fruit tastes
best if it’s thawed in its sealed
container. It- also has better col
or. Texture is best if you leave
a few ice crystals in the fruit.
You can thaw the fruit in the
refrigerator, at room temperature
or in a pan of cool water. How
long it takes depends on the
method you choose.

CITY REQUESTS
OFF STREET PARKING
DURING HOLIDAYS
With the Christmas holidays at
hand, an appeal has been made by
the Mayor and City Council to
store owners and employees to
please use the City Parking Lot
on North Mulberry Street to al
low more parking places around
the square for customers and
shoppers.
M. L. Powell, City Clerk, said
that similar requests have been
made during recent years at the
Thanksgiving and Christmas Sea
sons and that cooperation, in the
main, has been very good. Much
additional parking around the
square will be available if store
owners and employees will coope
rate with the request, Mr. Powell
pointed out.

The candle has been lighted in the lamp beside the door. The
greens are hung, and the children are in a state of wild anticipation.
Soon we'll read the Christmas story and sing carols for the Christ Child.
Flames flicker on our hearthstone and in their depths gleam
memories.

A small boy, cold and hungry, kneels crying by his mother's bed.
Then kind hands lift him. Ladies from a nearby church bring a basket
for the widow, and save her life.

On a Pacific island, a badly wounded soldier moans with pain.
Tenderly, a chaplain bathes his face, then opens a tattered Bible and
begins to read. Anguish and suffering recede and hope stirs faintly.

Now the fire crackles. I stir the embers and thank God for
the ministry of dedicated people.
Your church interprets God's gift of love to the needy and the
helpless. Let us worship there.
