Voice Of
The Forest
BY JOHN R. BURNS JR.
Georgia Forestry Commission
I am the forest in Georgia; I
cover 25,772,700 acres or ap
proximately 69% of the total
land area in Georgia. I cover 2
out of every 3 acres in the state.
I represent approximately 66,-
000 jobs and wages of more than
$275,000,000.00. I am the state’s
second largest industry.
Because of my capacity to
grow and reproduce, Georgia has
led in the nation with pulp and
paper production for the past sev
eral years.
From within myself I supply
the raw materials to sustain the
operation of more than 900 pri
mary and secondary industries.
I am an annual billion dollar
industry in Georgia; worth as
much as all the other agricultural
products combined.
Not only do I contribute to
my state’s industrial economy: I
also help to create a better en
vironment.
From my soils I millions
of gallons of clear water. I stop
erosion and stabilize soil condi
tions. I filter the air and con
tribute greatly to its oxygen con
tent.
I provide recreation such as
hunting, boating, fishing, swim
ming, camping and many other
activities to Georgians and their
friends.
I provide shade and a moist cli
mate. When I stand alone as a
single tree, I create beauty.
In my own way, I give you
life.
