Butts-Monroe Repreientative
The Georgia House of Repre
sentatives began a whirl-wind
week last week which was the
final date for passing House bills.
The House passed and sent to
the Governor a Senate bill pro
viding a four hundred dollar
grant for freshman college stu
dents attending private colleges
in Georgia. This will increase
one class each year until event
ually freshman through seniors
are covered. This bill if signed
into law by the Governor will be
especially beneficial to the pri
vate colleges in Georgia such as
Tift College at Forsyth.

The House continued to pass
bills placing controls and at the
same time attempting to outlaw
x-rated movies and adult book
stores. With the emphasis on law
and order all members of the
Georgia State Patrol and the
GBI were given a One Hun
dred Dollar a year pay raise. The
House also passed a bill which
would let a person receive credit
for entering a plea of nolo con
tendere only once for the offense
of DUI.
The House also agreed with
the Senate on a bill requiring
new car bumpers after January
1, 1973 to withstand impact of
five miles per hour on the front
and two and one-half miles per
hour in the rear.
To encourage people to file
their advalorem tax returns on
intangible property the House
passed a law providing for these

The House continued to pass
bills giving more strength to the
Water Quality Control Board and
providing that evidence obtained
by the Water Quality Control
Board would be admissible in
court.
The House passed a bill requir
ing persons 65 or over who do
not wish to serve on the jury to
notify the jury commissioners of
this fact.
In an effort to help farmers the
House passed a bill exempting
farm machinery used in dairying,
beef cattle operations, and poul
try operations from the Georgia
Sales Tax. Should this bill pass
the Senate and be signed into law
by the Governor, then it would
give some relief to the farmers
in Butts and Monro e Counties.
The House also passed a bill re
quiring people buying livestock
at a sale to pay for the same

On Friday of last week the
House passed an additional ap
propriations bill appropriating
money provided by the four cents
a pack cigarette tax increase.
Nearly eight million dollars of
this appropriation went to the
Department of Education and
three million dollars of this will
be used to hire five hundred or
more remedial reading teachers.
One hundred thousand dollars of
this was to Fernbank Science
Center in DeKalb County and the
schools in Butts and Monroe
County should take advantage of
this center.
Over one million dollars of the
supplemental appropriations will
go to the Game and Fish Com
mission and this is money raised
by an increase in the hunting
and fishing licenses. The hunting
and fishing license also provides

The House continued to try
and find ways to give relief to
the ad valorem tax payers. The
House passed a bill freezing the
local effort for education.
The House also pased a bill
providing for central purchasing
of school bus bodies when it was
learned that school bus bodies
were costing approximately one
thousand dollars more in Georgia
than they were costing in Florida
and South Carolina.

Miss Jean Evans is spending
the Spring Holidays with her par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Evans,
and sister, Miss Peggy Evans. She
is a student at Georgia Southern
College in Statesboro.
Mrs. Alton Colwell spent last
Thursday with her father, Mr.
Paul C. Green of Griffin, who is
a patient at Piedmont Hospital
in Atlanta. Spending the week
end with Mr. and Mrs. Colwell,
A1 and Chris were her brothers,
Rickey and Tommy Green, of
Griffin.
Martin Ridgeway, a student at
Georgia Tech in Atlanta, is expec
ted home Friday to spend the
Spring holidays with his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. J. Harry Ridgeway.
Mr. and Mrs. Lovett Fletcher
spent the weekend in Savannah
where they attended the National
Guard Convention.
