BY REV. FRANCIS L. FORD
Pastor Jenkinsburg United
Methodist Charge
Will Rogers once said “What
this country needs is dirtier fin
gernails and cleaner minds.” If
he were alive today I wonder if
Mr. Rogers wouldn’t look around
and still make the same state
ment.
Times have changed greatly
since the twenties and early thir
ties when Will Rogers was alive
and famous. Men don’t have to
work as hard physically as they
did then. We have all kinds of
modern machinery to take much
of the toil out of our labors. And
the women? They too, have it
much better than when Will Rog
ers was alive. Wood stoves, fire
places, wash pots and homemade
soap are things of the past. In
their places, the housewife finds
herself blessed with automatic
ranges, gas heat, automatic wash
ers and dryers and soap with j
hexachlorophene.
But, with all this greatness
that has come our way in the last
40 years Or so, what about man’s
mind? Is it any better? And if
not, why?
Will Rogers was one of the
really great homespun philoso
phers who was able to look past
the artificial surroundings and
see the real humor of man and
also the real heartbreak and ugli
ness of that same creature. He
brought to many peoples’ minds
the awareness that we are really
all pretty much alike and that it
should be of primary importance
that we treat each other with
courtesy and respect.
A long time ago, a man named
Jesus walked the dusty roads of
Judea preaching the same kind
of message. Peoples’ minds were
full of all kinds of bitter thoughts
about their neighbors, the out
casts, the sick, the poor and the
social status of those around
them. He challenged men to have
cleaner minds and nobler
thoughts. But, man’s nature has
not changed very much since
then.
And it seems that man has not
made any great improvement in
himself since Will Rogers home
spun philosopsy was being quoted
Will man change or will man
just change the things around
him? If it continues to just be
the second choice, then we are
all doomed tq. two hells. One on
this earth and one in the life
to come. Will Rogers said “My
folks didn’t come over on the

Mayflower, they were here to
greet them.” Too many people
are too concerned about who
they are and not what they are.
Jesus continually preached that
we should love our neighbors, love
our enemies, help those less for
tunate and he set the example by
washing the feet of the disciples.
If we make the same material
improvements in the world in the
next 40 years that w e have in the
last 40 years and man does not
change down inside where it real
ly counts, what kind of a world is
it going to he to live in? Would
you w'ant to live in it? Or have
your children live in it? Think
about it.

When Tom retired, it seemed as if his dreams had come true. For years
he and Grace had been planning. There would be that little pink house in
Florida and time to do all the things they wanted. They could keep in touch
with their friends back home, and there would be occasional visits back
and forth.
What they hadn't realized was how much they would miss their church.
It had been such a part of their life! Now it seemed that no other church
j could fill the gap. In fact, they didn't go to another church their first few
I weeks in Florida.
I But finally one Sunday they went to the little church they had been
1 passing each day on the way to the golf course. True, it wasn t like the
£ church back home-outwardly. But, when you got down to essentials, it was
k nj the same.
If you have moved to another community, find anew
jU, church home. Regardless of its appearance, remember
that it is God's House and in it you will be welcome.
