Pastor Jenkintburg United
Methodist Charge
Thomas Edison, the inventor
of the electric light bulb, once
said “Genius is one percent in
spiration and ninety-nine percent
perspiration.”
In reading the life story of
Thomas Edison, I was amazed to
learn that while he was searching
for a filament to use in the light
bulb that would glow and last for
a long time, he tried over five
thousand different kinds of ob
jects before using a little wire
called tungsten.
IMAGINE! Over five thousand
failures in this man’s life, yet he
never gave up. On and on he
went, still seeking the answer,
knowing that somewhere he had
to be able to unlock the secret
that he had searched for so long.
No wonder Thomas Edison was
able to say that genius was only
one percent inspiration and
ninety-nine percent perspiration.
He had the great talent of stick
ing to a task until the answer
or the goal was obtained, re
gardless of the odds, the failures
or the setbacks along the way.
I feel that this is one of the
really big problems troubling peo
ple today, (‘specially those called
Christians. The old talent called
“stickability” does not seem to
be bred into the fibre of many
men today. Everywhere people
are giving up, throwing in the
towel, turning to alcohol or drugs,
or crawling into their little shells,
hoping to find a haven.
Marriages are on the rocks in
alarming proportions, discontent
is found in abundance in every
area of society. While many peo
ple seem to possess the one per
cent inspiration, it appears that
very few possess the necessary
ninety-nine percent perspiration
to be able to succeed at their
task.
Why? What has happened to
us? Are we all mad or have we
just lost our sense of direction
and values?
A young man came to Jesus
one day and asked him what he
must do to inherit eternal life.
The young man, like many peo
ple today, was troubled down in
side nnd was looking for answers.

Dennis Waits of Albany was a
business visitor to Jackson Fri
day. While here he visited his
mother, Mrs. S. F. Peters, and
Mr. Peters on Indian Springs
Street.
Friends of Mrs. W. G. Hicks
Sr. and Mrs. W. C. Stinson will
regret to learn their mother, Mrs.
Bruce Pierce, is a patient at St.
Joseph’s Hospital where she has
been confined for several days.
Mrs. W. M. Redman, Sr., Mr.
and Mrs. Mercer Hodges and Mrs.
G. L. Swun attended the funeral
of Mrs. I’. L. Thaxton Friday in
Griffin. Mrs. Thaxton was the
daughter of the late Col. and
Mrs. C. L. Redman of Jackson.
Bobby Harrison, student at
Georgia Tech, is spending Spring
holidays with Mr. and Mrs. Levi
J. Ball on Indian Springs Street.
Not half-answers or temporary
substitutes, but real, honest, per
manent answers to a deeply
troubled heart.
Jesus showed the young man
how he had put too much trust in
his personal wealth and chal
lenged the young man to sell his
world possessions and come and
follow Jesus. The young man
could see the followers of Jesus
around him and was able to see
the demanding task that was be
ing asked of him. This young man
had the one percent inspiration
to come to Jesus and ask him
about eternal life. He wanted an
inner peace. But, he lacked the
nintety-nine percent perspiration
to be willing to pick up his cross
and follow the Master and be
obedient to His will.
How about you? Are you like
Thomas Edison? Have you the
“stickability” to submit yourself
to God’s will and stay with it?
Or are you like the ruler who
had the one perce'nt inspiration,
but lacked the ninety-nine per
cent perspiration. Think about it.

Thera are days when Jim feels "all geared up." Like many men today,
he has the sense of being just a cog in a wheel —no real identity. This is
Wrong!
It fakes a great many Jims, all kinds, to keep the wheels turning. But
each is important, and each is an individual. God intended men to have not
only a sense of identity, but a basic self-esteem.
Maybe you've been underestimating yourself! Maybe you've been feel
ing that you are just one of the crowd! If so, during this Lenten season you'd
better take anew look at both the world and yourself.
For anew perspective, maybe you'd better start going to church.
