The leaves in our county have
turned their gorgeous hues of
red, yellow, orange and other
artistic colors which ar e always
looked toward to each fall. One
has only to look into the woods
or yards of homes in the area to
see some of God’s prettiest handi
work for this time of year. Along
with the beauty though comes the
unenviable task of having to rake
and rake in border to keep the
dead leaves from collecting in
the yard. We started raking last
week and had a nice big pile
when our Boxer decided that she
wanted them for a bed and
jumped into th e middle of them,
settled down and took a nice long
nap We suppose by now
that you’ve consumed more than
your share of turkey, dressing,
giblet gravy and other Thanks
giving trimmings and are more or
less kicking yourself for having
eaten so much. Most of the men
who are not in Atlanta attending
the football games at Grant Field
between Georgia and Tech have
probably drawn the easy chair up
next to the television on the pre
text of watching the boob tube
when what they will really do is
spend the afternoon sleeping.
Hunters of the county are spend
ing the day in the woods hoping
to finally get the deer they’ve
been stalking for several weeks.
After washing what seems like a
never ending pile of dishes, the
wives and mothers have probably
settled down for an afternoon
of conversation and relaxation,
scooting the children and grand-

CARE BATTLES IN 35
COUNTRIES OF WORLD
CARE fights hunger, poverty
and disease in 35 countries of
Asia, Africa, Latin America and
the Middle East. It sends not only
food, but also seeds and tools to
increase food production; it helps
build schools, nutrition centers
and health centers; it aids whole
communities with water supply
projects, road building, tool kits
to help train youths for jobs in
various trades, classroom kits to
improve education. In times of
disaster, as in the recent devas
tating earthquake in Peru, CARE
speeds both immediate and long
range help.

that we hear of Mrs. Lucile Hut
cheson’s retirement from the
Butts County Health Department.
An especially familiar face to
us, we can recall the many times
during our school years that stu
dents were given shots by Mrs.
Hutcheson who always had a
knack for calming little ones
down and making it as easy and
painless as possible. Her calm
steady voice and quiet manner has
settled many a child’s nerves and
has provided the feeling of “I
care” to older persons who have
been under her care. We shall
miss her and hope that she enjoys
her retirement and will be able
to carry out any future plans she
may have, whether they be travel
or just taking life easy
We carried our little four year
old nephew to see Santa Claus
last Tuesday night at Sears and
he was so excited about seeing
Santa he failed to tell him what
he wanted for Christmas. When
asked what he thought about San
ta Claus his comment was a
quick “he didn’t comb his beard
very good.” Speaking
of Santa Claus, our direct line
to the North Pole informs us that
Santa has already received a let
ter from one of his favorite little
girls who, in addition to what she
wanted, has asked Santa to bring
something for her favorite cat.

most of you want to know the
best way to keep your pecans
fresh and flavorful. So here are
a few tips which I hope will help.
Storing pecans at lowered tem
peratures will help maintain pe
can quality. And in-shell pecans
can be stored longer than shelled
pecans. The smaller the pecan
meat, the shorter the storage life.

At 32 to 36 degrees F.. ( in-shell
pecans can be stored successfully
for 18 months. At zero degrees
F., in-shell pecans can be stored
successfully for six to ten years,
although we doubt anyone will
want to keep their pecans that
long.
Most people like to go ahead
and shell their pecans, and need
less to say this cuts down on
stroage space and makes them
readily available when you want
to use them. Shelled pecan halves
will remain fresh up to 12 months
if stored at 32 to 36 degrees F.
Remember, pecans absorb odors
easily—onions, wood, ammonia,
paint, things like that. So store
pecans separately or with prod
ucts which produce no strong
odors. Of course, storage does not
improve quality. At best, pro
per storage only maintains what
ever quality is currently there.
