5 Safety Bills
To Face Battle
In Assembly
Five traffic safety bills which
could save more than 500 of the
almost 2,000 deaths each year on
state roads will face voting action
in the next session of the Geor
gia General Assembly. Capitol
sources feel that the controversial
bills will realize a tough battle
for approval in the assembly and
that public opinion will account
for a significant margin of favor.
The proposals—which will deal
with driver education, re-exami
nation, medical services and ha
bitual offenders—should save
part of an average 150 lives each
month and an annual economic
loss of S3OO million from wrecks
on state highways. Legislators
favoring state action against
highway slaughter are presently
gathering support from “Five for
500” seminars being held in a
number of counties.
The “500” meetings allow the
state public to study all aspects
of the five bills and their effect
on road safety. From there it is
hoped that citizens will contact
their legislators to urge a vote
favorable to their desire.
The pending traffic safety
bills are as follows:
1. State Financing for Driver
Education designed to remedy
Georgia’s standing as the only
state in the southeast not provid
ing financial aid to high school
driver education programs.
2. Periodic Re-Examination—
designed to test eyesight since
it is the one facility which helps
with 90 per cent of a driver’s
decisions.
3. Habitual Offender Law—
proposes a mandatory 1-5 year
jail sentence for anyone caught
driving without a license while
committing a similar offense
after three DUI convictions or
15 moving traffic violations with
in a 10 year period.
4. State Licensing for Emerg
ency Medical Services—designed
to set up a licensing system
whereby the Georgia Health De
partment could impose standards
of equipment, personnel training
and operating procedures on res
cue services.
5. Driver License Classification
—calls for separate tests in each
category of driving a car, motor
cycle, bus and tractor trailer in
the state.
