Grove, Ga., has returned to home
port at Long Beach, Calif., after
a 16,000 mile journey to the Arc
tic, Japan and Russia aboard
America’s largest and most pow
erful icebreaker, the Coast Guard
Cutter Glacier.
Gibson and his shipmates par
ticipated in ecological and geolo
gical research in the North Pa
cific and Beaufort Sea aboard
Glacier, and paid an historical
three-day visit to Nakhodka, Rus
sia, arranged under a joint U. S.-
Soviet agreement which provides
for exchange visits between
oceanographic vessels of the two
nations.
Glacier returned to Long
Beach via Honolulu, and is
slated to be home for about sev
en months before beginning her
next venture to the frozen north.
